100% True!

+1

At the end of the day, there are two kinds of music - good and bad.

I'm really digging on Dream Theater's new record, I love Tool and the new Alice In Chains stuff. I'm just now getting into Porcupine Tree and they rock my world. I like Unearth and Mastodon as well.

And there's always Dethklok. :D

there seems to be a culture of wanting to label everything. 5 seconds on wikipedia will show you what im talking about, here are some of the "subgenres" of metal according to wikipedia:

sludge metal, deathcore, metalcore, grindcore, death metal, black metal, doom metal, crust punk (my favourite), drone doom, stoner metal (haha), post-hardcore metal .... there can't be that many subgenres... there just cant

i mean.. if you're talking to someone about their band and you go "so what sort of music do you guys play"

- "crust punk metal"

- >blank look<

i mean wahts the point? its a meaningless answer as far as most people are concerned.

A good example is how people always call Pantera "groove metal", i understand the reference, because pantera does have a very defined "groove" to their songs, but i still cringe a little when i hear the reference.. i bet you the (still breathing) members of pantera wont call themselves "groove metal", theyll just call it metal.

another example is that movie airheads (i think its airheads), where a band takes a radio station hostage demanding that they play their song. the DJ then asks them "fine, what kind of music do you guys play anyway" and then what follows is a rabble of hurried explanations using words like "kind of like ", "not as" "with a little" blah blah blah.. the point here is that (in theory) they had their own sound, something they couldnt sum up in some hyphonated genre-bracket. and thats how it should be

i think i got a bit side tracked.

I'm more of a progressive guy so I don't like ordinary metal that much. 4/4 beats and simple song formats ( intro - verse - chorus - verse ... )
They just sound boring to me. I do like good music though. Doesn't matter what genre it is. I occasionally listen to some Black Metal and then switch on some Joe Cocker.

So many new metal bands sound the same. If a band sounds the same as everything else does, what's the point of that band then? Just another cheap copy? Some originality, please...

Genres that I usually listen to:
Progressive rock/metal, Fusion Jazz, Jazz, Blues

I would consider myself a Metal fan. It doesn't matter if it's modern or not. Anything from Led Zeppelin to Behemoth.

Then you ain't seen nothing yet, Crabcore:

I always feel a total facepalm-moment when I watch Attack Attack...

Though, I agree with you, those subgenres got out of hand.

That's what I think of when I think of metal. Between the Buried and Me, Killswitch Engage, Five Finger Death Punch, Arch Enemy, etc. Basically... active pickups, loads of gain, double bass, and some type of scream/growl vocals at least 50% of the time. It can be well done, but some metal just doesn't have enough 'something' to keep me interested.

I prefer melodic hard rock stuff like Sevendust, Breaking Benjamin, and Chevelle, but they are not metal IMO.
