I just hope this whole silly 7 -8 string crap will go way of the dodo bird like those silly ( keytar) keyboard guitar things from the 80s. I think they are ugly, produce crap uninspired music, and are geared to these neo progressive bands ,its just....... Yuk! I know this might sound harsh, but c'mon a lot of us are thinking this.

I know ebmm produces some 7 strings, and Im sure they are of the utmost quality, as is everything they make, but its REALLY just not for most of us, and the axis/evh is one of the most beautiful guitars ever imho and altering it in this fashion would be a travesty! And yes I think all this chug chug down tuned crap is SO uninspired and leading the younger crowd into not developing proper skills, because if all they want to do is bang on the lowest open string and bar a few chords, they will never flourish.

Well... Dear ebmm friends, I would kindly ask some of you not to comment on how crap music made with 7 string guitars is, as it's totally not related to my question - who wants a 7 string axis?
As someone already pointed out extra string can be used in far many ways than just writing another monster riff with that string only. Think of high gain amps used not for metal only ;)
Seven string guitars have been on the market for decades and it's pretty too late now to question their existence. Personally I dislike floyd rose trems but I have no problem with sounds made with them by some players. Also not a big fan of EVH but respect to his technique and his fans too.
There's amp modelling, 5 string bases, alternative techniques and other stuff that shows just how fun and creative playing guitar can be, we should cherish the variety we have as players!
So let's stick to original question, all best folks :)

I would love a 7 string axis... and if its not an axis, then a 7 string guitar that sounds like an axis. There is something to the sound of an axis that sets it apart.. and that tone in a 7 string version would be killer.... for whatever riff I choose I like to express myself with ;)

I've heard some amazing music on 7 & 8 string guitars. (Again ... listen to Charlie Hunter ... dude blows me away), so there's a big world outside of the chugga-chugga stuff.

In the end, though, these things boil down to cost. I would imagine the 7-string market is small, and MM already offers something in that configuration with the Petrucci line.

Beej,
thanks for backing me up on Charlie Hunter...monster player and super nice guy. Most young rockers don't realize the 7 string has been a jazz instrument for close to 100yrs now. I play hard and heavy in one band and soft and mellow in another. I love 7 string guitars and I have several JP 7's because I love ebmm, but I would love an axis ss hardtail 7 even more. I have never been big on signature models and the necks on JP6 guitars are way to thin for me. JP 7 is okay. The axis with it's shape is ideal for me and so I would love them to make one.
Coming from manufacturing I understand the cost involved and it may be way out of the question. In reality, I think programing a wider pickup route with a wider neck pocket is possible on the existing axis body. I have thought of trying it with a JP7 neck and a used axis body to get some real world dimensions. I know of someone that put an axis neck on a JP6 body to get the armscoop and it turned out fairly well. My ultimate would be an solid color axis (lose the binding) with an armscoop and a 7 string axis neck...

Yan,

You know the Axis started life as a signature guitar and that some people still refer to it as the best guitar associated with that particular artist.

I certainly do know it was an EVH. I love the fact that it has no name on it these days and I did not like the one volume or location of the pickup selector. Wise move on EBMM's part to add a tone knob and move the selector, as I consider that rendition perfect.
The asymmetrical neck with the thinner treble side is awesome and the only thing I would change would be to make it a 12" radius.

I actually prefer the moved switch and the belly contour on the Axis. I also like not having EVH on the headstock as I don't have to worry about collectibility anymore.

I'm still not sure that the body shape or the neck profile would lend itself to a 7 string.

This is something I would be interested in… I have never owned a 7-string but am very interested and in fact I have a JP13 7-string on order. But you all know the Axis is where it's at for me. So depending on how things work out when I receive and spend some time with the JP13, I would probably be up for a 7-string Axis.

While I don't know if this is something that feels right as an ongoing production model, I wonder if there would be a chance of a limited run. While the CAD changes for the neck and body would probably be easy, you'd also need 7-string Axis pickups and the real cost-prohibitive part for a limited run would probably be a 7-string EBMM Floyd Rose.

I'd just be happy for a limited run of Hard Tail Axis guitars! I miss my old ones..

I think we all need to be careful what we wish for. Do any of you remember when Washburn came out with the N7? Well, places still can't give them away. They look awful. Why? Because they just widened the neck and kept the body the same. The axis has a small body to begin with and just throwing a 7th string on that is going to be the N7 scenario all over again. It would look like poo. If MM redesigned it from scratch, enlarged the body, etc.... then I'd buy one.

I feel as though i threw gas on a fire, for that I am sorry, I just never liked the 7 string idea, and like stratty says, it was a ( signature) guitar, and I still see it as one, since Eddie put that guitar on the map, and I just would not want to see it in a 7 string.

Would people be happy with a Reflex 7? Similar, but larger body and a thinner neck profile that may lend itself better to a 7 string neck... Then the Axis can remain untouched and people can have their "Axis Shaped" 7 string guitar..

Well, even if they did release a 7 string Axis model, I highly doubt they'd discontinue the 6 string Axis, so I don't get the "let the Axis remain untouched" argument :)
