well you have arrived at the right guitar! I would go the axis super sport, do you need a floyd that bad? I dont have a regular axis, just two super sports, and they sure can go as heavy and distorted as you want, you may want to consider a luke or a silhouette special w/h'bucker, they are even more verstaile than an Axis.

I'm not really into EMGs all that much, and I don't really like the look of the silhoette. The trem is sort of an issue. I like to use the bar, not really often and all crazy stuff, but I like to have versatility. The Petrucci trem is all I need as far as versatility, but I don't really know if that SS could handle the same stuff as the Petrucci trem. I really don' like that white tip either. That bugs me on my strat too. It's hard to do flutter because of that thing, it hurts.

I think I've seen that one before, pretty awesome. They have quite a few vids on youtube of John's rig. On a side note, I'm not how this applies to the thread topic, lol.

Haven't tried the Axis, but I've tried the ASS through a couple of crap amps. I didn't think hit had the modern edge that the JP has. More of a "vintage" sound and feel. Definitely sings. Definitely rockin', but just not DT or "metal" enough. It was "spongier" in feel.

That being said, I still want an ASS at some point. Maybe with the MM90s.

Alright, it's gone too far.... now back to the regularly scheduled Axis and Metal discussion....

right on. way to get things back on track...

I think the axis super sprt would work great for what you want.

did you ever see that MTV show about amateur bands making it onto Ozzfest? One of the lead guitarists on that show used a Super Sport and it did metal well. w/ teh 5 way switch you can shut off the distortaion and do your jazz etc as well. The super sport has a vintage trem option too. Ive never used it tho ....

also dont shut down the EMGs on the Luke too quick. Lukes are really badass guitars. If the EMG 85 isnt "metal" enough you could easily swap it for an EMG 81 and thats a pretty standard metal pickup (metallica, slayer etc use it)

good luck hunting!

Waay to go Brent!
I have a regular Axis with a Floyd - I play all sorts form rock, jazz, country, blues and the odd bit of metal - this guitar cuts it for me in all styles - no problem. I have not tried any other EBMM guitars, but from what other people say and from videos posted they are all incredibly versatile instruments - each guitar seems to have its own tonal characteristics - that I guess is down to the choice of the individual in the end.

It's not that the EMGs can't andle metal, they handle metal no problem. I'm not a fan of cleans with EMGs.

Thanks for all the other input. Cool vid Brent! It startin to get a little heavier, but it's not quite there yet, heh. What pickups come with the Axis? I guess I could always swap out the pickups for something that could handle metal a little better.

I don't know the exact model that comes with the axis, but I know the equivalent from Dimarzio. Tone Zone in the Bridge. Air Norton in the Neck. The pickups that come with the Axis are pretty balanced.

I bet a Dimebucker or other really high output pickup would give the Axis enough punch for what you're loking for.

Well, I know that the pickups in the Axis are Dimarzio, so wouldn't they be those exact pickups? If they are in fact those pickups, those should be totally fine. That combination is what a lot of people use, they used to be a ton of Ibanez models. That's what Petrucci had in his old signature guitar. So if the Axis does in fact have the TZ and AN, what other factors would make the guitar sound different than any of those old Ibanez guitars. Petrucci obviously got some pretty heavy tones out of thse pups. Maybe I still just have to see the right person play an Axis, who knows.

I think it may also be an issue of what equipment you use (amp, effects, etc).

One of these through a triple rectifier or other high gain amp would positively scream!!

I think the ASS can do JUST fine in the Metal area, with those hot pups. Also you have to set the amp up accordingly and it will kick almost any other guitars ass lol. And for the Luke, I would not say it is perfect for METAL, but that 85 is nice and fat and you can get some heavy sh*t out of it if you want :D. The Silo is not bad at all either, if you change the pups to somtheing like a super distortion and a Breed neck.

Oh, groovetuber, the single coil SLVs on the Luke probably have the BEST clean sound I have heard so far. I got a Breed Neck pup in my Silo which is AWESOME, but seriously the SLVs in the Luke are thousand times better on clean and when you roll the tone off you get almost a PERFECT jazz sound.

There are some great heavy tones on Toto's latest, "Falling in Between." Seems like Luke's sound is rockin' harder than ever.
