I don't know what retail is for them now, but a quilt top will add $500 to the price, and they all come with cases included in the price no matter what some large retailers would have you think.

That's the beauty of Ernie Ball...there's no second guessing its authenticity, whilst other manufacturers often hide their asian (and Mexican) cousins with unoticable secondary names, like...well you know

The way I understand it, if you order an Axis from EBMM, you get to choose the color, and whether or not you want a matching headstock. They could either put a quilt top or a flame top on it if you just order a regular model. If you pay the $500 upcharge, you will get to choose whether you get a Flame or a Quilt, and it will be of premium quality figuring.

If I have this wrong, someone please correct me.

All EBMM guitars are made in San Louis Obispo, California, except for the Axis EX, which is made for the Japanese market. I believe all the parts are still made in California, but shipped to Japan for final assembly. They will not say anything on the headstock except Ernie Ball Music Man. No Axis, and no EVH signature. These will also be assembled in the EVH signature configuration, with the pickup selector on the lower horn. The EXs I've seen have a pretty maple cap, but did not look like a bookmatched figured maple cap.

If it says Axis on the headstock, it's American made. All EBMM guitars come with cases. Well, I'm not sure about the Sub 1 guitars, but I know the Axis does.

The Subs do not come with a case

what would be a good price for a good used axis quilt? $900???

I've seen them for as little as $700 on eBay (I know 'cause I almost did a Buy It Now on one, but someone else got to it a few seconds before I did! )....you don't see 'em that often at that price, but I've seen a few since then. $750-$900 seems to be a more average sales rate.

Regarding nobozos' comments:

The EXs have very pretty tops, bookmatched, but the beauty is only skin deep. It's a 1mm veneer of highly figured maple pasted onto a 6mm slab of maple (probably unfigured)--hmmm. . . that doesn't sound very nice. Well the good part is that you don't know it till you take the neck off. It looks and sounds great. And in Japan, they are about $700 cheaper than the SLO Axes which sell for $2500+ (new).

Here are some photos of mine. The pink one is an EX:
