I see EBMM has changed the Axis locking nut design in recent years... previously the nut was bolted through holes in the back of the neck, but now they are attaching the nut from the front using wood screws.

Why did they change this?

Hi I.T,

The change was made when we switched to the new bridge in June of 2011.
The new nut was just one of several key improvements; Trem arm snaps in, trem arm drag screw located beneath bridge plate, nickel plated pivot screws,

The new surface mount nut prevents drilling holes through the neck, a better design for structural integrity.
Other benefits are that you do not feel those holes on the back of the neck while playing or see the mounting hardware.

I can say that pretty much every company that used to use the drill-through floyd rose lock nuts stopped doing it, for the same reason.
