Ok, I have a few questions that have been bugging me and hopefully someone at EB can give me a definitive answer.

** I'm refering to an Axis model with Floyd Rose trem, not SS.

1.) Is removing all the strings to clean the fretboard bad for my neck?

I've done this before, but wonder if its a good idea or not, I'm careful about the bridge popping off, so that's not my concern, just the neck tension.

2.) I'm considering giving my guitar the Oil/Wax treatment, since it hasn't been done since it left the factory in 2001. Is taking my neck off the guitar the best way to do this? If not, what is? Also, is there any specific information about how to best go about doing this?

I know nothing about wood, or these oils/wax finishes. My Axis is the first with this for me.

3.) Shims? My guitar seems to have two plastic shims in the neck pocket, and I'd like to add a third to angle the neck a little bit more. Since I don't have these perfect fit plastic shims, what can I use. I doubt I can find a piece of wood thin enough for what I want. Will anything else degrade my tone? Does EB always use plastic shims?

My guitar was purchased brand new so these shims are factory.

Thanks in advance.

:)

1. NO...unless you leave the strings off for more than a day or two!

2. YES...its WAY easier with the neck off of the guitar to do this...

3. Snip up a credit card ;)

does the credit card (or some similar type of card) trick really work? cuz I was considering doing that to angle the neck and improve my action on the upper frets some more....

thanks!

yep, works great - I use an old driver's license I cut strips from, but the principle is the same...

What about something thinner? I'd love to be able to get a piece of wood thin enough, but I'm looking for paper thin, I only wanna adjust it a hair.

Actually, it's as low as it will go, and I'm trying to squeeze a little bit more out of my action, to get it slightly lower beyond the 12th fret. I'm pretty happy with it from 1-12, but 12 and up could be lower.

sorry.......i meant to say lower........dislexic ???

are you out of threads on the post?????
are the post anchors seated all the way down. i never seen it on e/balls....but i've seen other brands post anchors slightly up rooted ..preventing the bridge from lowering properly........
just a thought....

Hmm, ... stuff to check tonight. I believe it's down as low as it'll go, and the posts are in all the way. I'm gonna have a look to be sure though.

The Axis is non-recessed and the trem rests on the body of the guitar by default. It cannot be lowered. The anchors should be perfect in the body, EBMMs usually are. This is why shimming the neck is the only option with the axis.

Yes, I've done that already, but to get the upper frets right, I get some buzz on the lower ones.

I'm suprised no EB people have put thier two cents in this thread though ... ?

you're right blackspy, a piece of CC is a RADICAL shim - what my Axis is shimmed with right now is two small pieces of masking tape layed one atop the other between the two screw holes at the end of the neck. That was all I needed...
