hi guys,

I have had my natural Axis for a couple of years and, although it plays amazingly, it has always sounded very thin compared to my other guitars, despite adjusting everything, trying different strings and so on. I know the pickups aren't the hottest out there but I also have a Peavey Wolfgang hardtail which sounds so warm and creamy comparedto the Axis.

Does anyone else have the same issue that they rectified. I love this guitar but need it to sound fatter.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I am very happy with the Axis pickups and won't change mine, but I will say that the wolf's I used to own did sound a little creamier. Perhaps a pickup swap would do the trick for you? I'm wondering if the Axis has a floyd or a hardtail?

Hi mate,

It's a Floyd equipped Axis. It may well be the trem thinning it a little. I am looking at the Bare Knuckles website as I write - I have their pickups in other guitars.

I just would like a creamier, fuller sound as I feel that I have to fight these at the moment.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I have my heart set on the Bare Knuckles Holy Diver. That bad boy may be just the sound you are looking for. It sounds very full and rich to my ears. I also like the Rebel Yell. Those guys make some amazing pickups. I think the evh pickups they sell now sound more like the wolf's pickups than the axis pickups. So, that is a possibility.

Since you have a Floyd, the trem changes the tone somewhat, but maybe using a different block would help? Like an oversized brass block.

The Axis is the most amazing guitar to play. To me it would be worth the effort to try to "fix" this problem so that you can love the guitar.

Good luck!

Hi Bryan,

Funny you should say that - I have a HD set in my LP Custom and it sounds great. I was looking at the MM set or the MM Bridge/ CS neck in the Axis.

I'll look at a bigger block for the OFR as well.

Cheers,
Jim

I agree the axis pups are great, but i like my Peavey wolfgang better, the thing is that its a slightly fuller sound, and i think the axis pups sound a little hotter? But thinner? The peavey pups are great! So are the dimarzios, i think some EQ would help, but they are different guitars.

I agree totally - the Wolfgang seems to sound more throughout the whole spectrum whereas the axis has a very narrow sound. I am going to experiment with pickups and beef up the OR.
