My early 2000s Axis Super Sport was having issues with the A string machine head. It was getting so stiff that stress cracks were appearing in the pearl tuning key! I tried loosening the key itself but the problem appeared to be with the gears inside. The machine heads were the old kind of Schaller locking keys and I was not able to find one at a reasonable price. So with this in mind, I ordered a complete set from EBMM of the new kind of Schaller machine heads.

If you have an older guitar some notes on the installation. The new machine heads are ever so slightly larger so they will fit in the headstock holes but they are a bit tighter. The new washer that goes under the nut on the face of the headstock has an insert that is designed to go into the machine head hole. Again, this does not fit in the roles without some slight reaming work. I chose to re-use the old washers which fitted fine.

Here’s to 100s more string changes on this well used axe!
