I understand this is an EBMM forum and this may not be appropriate. If so, please close it.

I have some upcoming gigs that will be played in places requiring me to take full advantage of my SVT-4Pro's 1600 watts. That said, I have 2 4X10 cabs that run different impedence (one is 4 ohm, the other is 8ohm.) I am thinking of selling them and some other gear and buying a big 8X10 rig with the pop to handle a big head like the 4Pro. I have seen a lot of good press about the new 8X10 Basson rig and am impressed by it's capability to supposedly handle a low B with authority.
Does anyone have any experience with this rig?
I also saw an article in Bass Player mag recently about the new Mark Bass 8X10. It looks interesting as well. I thought about going with the Ampeg 8X10 Classic, but have heard that it gets a little muddy.
Any suggestions? Need great sound and the ability to handle the SVT-4Pro monster.
I know the best thing to do is play before you buy, but I am going to have to trust folks as I do not live close to any major music stores.
The style of music will be rock to full-out metal.

stay with 4x10s - you only get older and your back will thank you!

I understand, but unfortnately, that isn't an option. I need all the power I can get. Not to mention, we'll have a lot of people for loading/unloading and setup/takedown.

If you had two 410 8ohm cabs it's the same as a 810 4 ohm cab in terms of how much power you'll "get" from your amp, plus you'll have some rig versatility - ie. you could just take one cab to rehearsal or for small venues rather than the whole rig.

Mark is 100% on here. Yeah some times there is a difference in cab accoustics due to baffling, but that won't make that much difference is a "big sound" situtation. I had an Ampeg fridge and 2 SWR Goliath 4x10s - the SWRs actually sounded louder (both were way too heavy) - my current 2 Neo 2x12s hold their own against a lot of the bigger setups - and the "B" isn't a problem.

Have you thought about Avatar cabs? I have an Avatar Neo 4x10 and it is one of the best sounding cabs i've ever owned and i've tried alot of cabs over the years. Two 8ohm 4x10's would only run you about $900. They only weigh 65 lbs. each and are rated @ 1000 watts RMS which would let you take full advantage of the SVT4 Pro's power.

Great! Just when I thought I had it narrowed down...:p
That is interesting. So you would basically just daisy chain the two cabs together. Answer me this though, do those Avatar cabs have Speakon connection or 1/4 inch or both? Would I be able to daisy chain them using speakon?

I guess the reason I was thinking of an 8X10 was because I emailed a tech at Ampeg as to his recommendation. He advised using an 8X10 with a straight shot Speakon for absolute power. But, now that I think about it, he may be trying to sway me into buying the Ampeg 8X10.

I play the pro-4 through that ampeg 8x10, I love this cab I actually have 2 of them (1 for practice, 1 in the trailer for shows). I've had that muddiness problem also, I just had to eq some of the bass out and problem solved.

Loend, I wondered why that couldn't be EQ'ed out.

I forgot to mention that the muddiness came from the Warwick, not the Bongo. I've had the perfect sound ever since I started using MM basses. I think that now I have a better control over the mids, so this allows me get get the tone that I like minus all of the mudd.

OK, that means more decisions. How is that Ampeg 8X10 with the 4 Pro for overall tone and volume? Any trouble keeping up with drummers, guitards, etc? Big venues and stages? How will it do with a low B?

IMO, it's a beast! It has plenty of volume for any venue. We sometimes play places where just the kick drum and vocals are going throught the pa and the bass holds up just fine.

The low B ROCKS throught this cab as well. Another reason that I love this thing (I don't work for ampeg, i swear) is that they are tanks. The one that I use for practice is over 9 years old. I have put this thing through hell and back and not a thing is wrong with it, minus scraps and scratchs.

If I were in the market for a cab, I would get the ampeg. But thats just me.

I hope this helps.:)

Thanks Loend...more to consider. I just don't want to jump in and regret my decision later.

I'll give you even more to consider;) I'm an "ampeg" guy . .

An Ampeg Preamp (SVP, BSP, pro) thru a 1000 watt Bergantino 3x10 powered cab.
I sold my my fridge & SVT-CL within days of putting this combo together.
~inexpensive Berg IP310's pop up on ebay every now and then.
Kills everything! seriously! don't listen to anyone else :D

Couldn't agree more bro. I just sold all my gear and picked up an IP310 and an ampeg SVP-CL and never had a better tone in my life

a double 4x12" cabinet setup would have a membrane area of approx 0,44m2 while the same thing with 10" would have approx 0,27m2
no doubt in my mind what would move most air ;)

MrM

ps: a double 2x15" cabinet setup would have approx 0,32m2 of area

I'm going to add my vote for Avatar. I currently use the 8 ohm Neo 410 and/or 8 ohm Neo 212. 99% of the time it's the 410 driven by a Thunderfunk 550,and it's plenty loud, and clean. The 2 cabs together are unreal! Big,loud, clean, and easy on the back. My entire big rig is lighter than the SVT cab by itself. Call Dave at Avatar and he'll set you up.I've owned both cabs for almost 2 years, and haven't looked at any other cabs.
