By that I mean would it narrow the sound at all? Heard so much stuff about the diamond being used with other pedals and them sounding worse as a result, but then is any of it even true?!

Once again, I think it comes down to education.
A lot of people will hear Musician A uses Pedal X and Y. So they think if they buy it, they will sound like them. When they realize they sound nothing like them they deduce that the pedals are rubbish.
If you get the Diamond and feel you are losing the tone of the VT. It's likely going to be by using too extreme settings on the compressor or you are using the Compressor after the VT in the signal chain.
I used to gig with a Bongo 5, Sansamp BDDI and Diamond Compressor as my standard tone and it was by far the best rock tone I've had.
You will love it.

The Diamond helps mellow out some of the harsher sounds from the BDDI and makes it fatter and warmer.
That's why the Diamond is great, the subtle compression settings are very transparent like the MXR but the the rest of the settings has a sound of it's own. You get the best of both worlds.

Man...I think I'm going to have to get a Diamond compressor for my bass. I have a Diamond compressor for my guitar and, as blindrabbit said above, it definitely has some "je ne sais quoi" that makes the sound pretty magical.

It's a tough one - the guys on talkbass are saying that I should go or the empress to use with the tech 21 vt bass. But, if the diamond fattens up the bddi surely it will do the same with the vt bass. Plus, there's just something about the diamond's tone...

You can't go wrong with either pedal, but be ware that the Diamond really has a sound of it's own. Personally, it's Cali76 tx all the way.

I use The Accountant by Fairfield Circuitry with my SR5. Pretty basic for a compressor, which I like. Makes it easy to dial in to my liking. Can be transparent on the more subtle settings, but adds it's own little overdrive when used on higher compression settings. Definitely has it's own character. Super small footprint is a bonus too.

I just got the ebs multicomp. It is awesomme! Really tightens up your sound verry well. Also a bit of boost if wanted. And 3 great modes to choose from, goes from verry neutral to verry thick sound. And at a great price!

I have owned some nice pedal comps including the Diamond, Empress, Markbass and 3Leaf. The Diamond wins hands down for me. It somehow "sweetens" my tone in a way that is just so pleasing. Plus its a dead simple pedal with no crazy tweaking required. Well worth owning one if you can swing it!

I'm probably going to go with the MXR. I like the meter, and the set ratios. I'm not looking for a compressor to color my tone. I basically want it to help tame low B's, and make things sound more uniform.

When I started this post I'd just left uni, and as of yet I've been unable to secure a job, so I haven't had the income to buy a compressor. However, I have a bit of a clearer idea now of the kind of music I want to be playing and the kind of sound I'm chasing.
Originally I'd heard so many positive things about the diamond that I liked the idea of a tone enhancing compressor. Now thought I'm set on buying a darkglass b7k, switching between a slightly dirty pre and full on drive. So, would I be better off with a more transparent compressor to preserve the sound of the b7k, or is it possible that pedals like the diamond and aguilar tlc would enhance the sound further?

I use a MXR Bass Compressor before my B7K (it gives a unique characteristic to my overdrive) and a Cali76-TX-LP for my clean sound...the Cali is very round and warm, while the mxr is more punchy.
