Bongo Single H Question

Still very happy here in 2-band Stingrayville. This one made me *gulp* put my Bongo down for a while.

She does rock, even if she is occasionally insane.

That was quite a present....she'd heard me talking about a Jazz to a friend of mine; we were perusing eBay and I pointed out a 62 RI and was saying I grew up with a (non-RI) early 60s Jazz and I think I was drinking and getting all nostalgic and weepy and - well, you guys know what I mean.

Honestly, I didn't really want a 62 RI Jazz. We were just having one of those bass slut conversations and she happened to overhear it, bless her heart.

To this day, she'll say, "Now which one did I get you again?" She is clue-free, although she thinks the new blue Bongo is "pretty".

Back on topic, we rehearsed last night for the first time since the last Ice Age and I used the blue Bongo HS for the first hour or so (with Slinkys).

Wow. What a HUGE tonal difference when you sweep that pickup knob back and forth. The Cowpilots were suitably impressed.

Then, for the last half of rehearsal, I switched to the single hummer.

I am now, finally, and I know I'm late to the party, beginning to understand why Sterling once said that he wished he had released the single hummer first.

(I can be pretty dense.)

And I can't quite put my finger on what it is that sets the single H apart. Yeah, yeah, I love my double hummers and the HS is just so damned elegant and versatile, but the caveman in me is really digging the "just pull the trigger and it goes boom" tonal assault of the single H.

Now keep in mind that I am a senseless slut for these basses. I love them all, really, and my preferences change like the seasons, only these would be seasons that would change every two weeks or so.....so anything I say should be taken with a grain of salt.

I loves me some Bongos.

But I'm having a little thing with my single hummer.

Not that I need much excuse to buy more gear, but I always considered the HS the most versatile of the three options, and assumed I was getting the H sound plus much more.

I have been preaching about the one pickup since the beginning. I understand why all of you like 2pu basses but I have always been really happy with the Sting Ray and more impoortantly the Stelring. The Single Hummer three band is just an extension of the sterling to me...tons of tone and real simple

I wouldn't say identical, as the HS Bongo's pickup is located a bit further away from the bridge than the HSC and HH's, giving it a 'sweet spot' location.

It's basically a point-and-shoot bass; simple set-up.
