Brent, Islandboys EVH and Benefit of the doubt

I posted this in another EVH thread but here is my take on a Joke that Brent took offense to and went way over the top.

I guess brent missed the benefit of the doubt class.

I will say that I am very disappointed at how this went down and I think that Islandboy got taken advantage of. How many of you would pay more than $850. for a pink EVH if given the opportunity?

Is the purpose of this forum to jump on someone that is asking their first question and
buying their guitar at below market price? I hope not.

Brent said that he thinks I pick on him. Im sorry but I rarely respond to his threads because they are usually buying and selling and dont hold my interest. I have joked with him about kids in a rehearsal photo and commented on how long he would own an instrument, but I really felt that they were in good fun. The only other reccollection I have is when I asked he and Brett to not rage a public battle here.

I appreciate Brents passion and have enjoyed watching the guitars pass through his hands.

Some people hold me to a higher standard than they hold themselves.

If Brent comes back how about apologizing to me for going postal over a simple joke? I apologize if you took my joke wrong...I thought you knew me better.

If you do come back rest assured I will never joke with you.

I thought that was a joke when I read it (the EVH sale price). Those things go on E-Bay for about a grand more (and then some).

Lets take Brent out of this. I have a forum representing our product and it is known as a resource fo all. If we get the reputation of skinning newbies when they come here to establish value, what does that do to the forum? EVHs are going for about two grand and there is a premium for pink...

Well, I just read the closed thread and must say that I can't quite imagine how what happened actually happened.

Basically, a new guy comes on with a pink EVH and a question about what it listed for originally. Clearly looking to see what its value is now, right?

I'm no guitar player but I do know that a pink EVH is going to be very popular around these parts. But in any case, we have a new visitor in our house and a long-time member with thousands of posts basically picks the new guy's wallet.

You know, it's not just BP who has responsibilities here. I have them and so do each of you, especially you long-time members.

Our responsibilities are not only to the forum, but to the new guy who walks in thinking, "Hey, I have some experts around here! I can listen to these guys!"

It's not an opportunity to buy something WAY under market value! The guy was looking to sell his guitar at a fair price, to see what the market was, and 850 dollars is neither fair nor market value.

He got pantsed. He walked in the door and got pantsed.

This is an abuse of status. There is no other way to see it. We have a certain reputation as the guys to talk to when you have EBMM questions, and there was a failure to live up to our obligations.

If a new guy came to me with a pre-EB Stingray in prime shape and he said, "I know you are smart about these things, do you think I could get 450 for it?" Then what kind of person am I if I say, "Maybe. Hell, I'll give you 450 and save you the hassle of listing it, dealing with unknowns, etc etc." ?

Would you respect me if I did that?

This is a rhetorical question. You would not.

That is, as nearly as I can tell, just about what happened and I would really not like to see it happen again.

Jack thanks but I would like to clarify your example...if you did this off the forum and met the guy in a bar...its your karma and he is fair game. If he posted here and you said to pm him and you would help him and then you bought it for $450 then you are taking advantage of the forumite and the forum.

I allow for sale threads at NO CHARGE. THis is to provide some liquidity at fair market value for you loyalists and newbies alike.

Good points. I thought you were kidding with him, and likewise, I was shocked on two accounts.

One, that he went straight for the sale without even letting the discussion open up. he did answer the guy's question, but only after he hit him up to buy it.

Two, that you actually kidded around with him, and he flew off the handle and temporarily left the forum.

I know these EVH's are major collector's items now, and that it's tough to get them at a low price. Even ones that aren't in great condition go easily for $1500. But I think there needs to be an air of fair play on this board. Let the guy get the info he needs, don't undersell him. Give everyone a chance here.

The irony is that in three weeks or so, it will be up on eBay with a reserve price 3 times higher than he bought it for.

It is nice to see that you are so quick and eager to string me up for a guitar deal that never did and never will take place. it hurts to think that some here think i'm that ruthless of a bastard!

Islandboy, i later found out later is an old friend that was joining up to find a deal for an EVH. He posted that thing about the $850 deal because he was dumbfounded by how i was attacked for inquiring about a possible sale/purchase. i wish he wouldnt have done that...but he didnt know how it was going to be twised once people got a hold of it here.

Bp, i see now how eager you were to throw me under the bus, especially when you didnt have all the facts..oh well, i wouldnt have expected any less...you make a good guitar, i hope that doesnt change.

But you know what that is ok...i'm gonna keep playing my EB guitars w/ a smile on my face...i probably wont buy anymore, (new anyway) certainly not to put more $$$ in your pocket, especially after the way you have treated me.

I dont mean to cut Brent short on a guitar but there has to be some fairness on here,as mentioned the forum should have been left to open up before consideration for selling was taken

then again with a guy with as high a reputation as brent I would have taken his word too if I hadnt a clue

Lets relax a moment. I made a joke. I will open the thread to show the joke. I have apologised for the joke. You have now attacked me twice in my house. Fine. Your feelings were hurt. I never intended for that to happen. I will apologize again. I have zero problems with you and am sorry you feel that I dont like you as that is not the case.

The facts were that Islandboy came into the forum inquiring about the original retail of the EVH. You immediately offered to buy it....I said JOKINGLY that you should answer his question before picking his pocket.

I missed all of the other stuff as I was traveling back to the desert. I came back to get the following facts:
1. YOu were livid and said some pretty harsh things aobut me
2. you bought the guitar
3. Islandboy said he sold the guitar for 850. and was happy that he only lost some money.
4. Other people tried to buy the guitar but Island boy once again said it was sold.

I am sorry that I made my points based on this information if it was all a ruse.

I have my doubts but will trust your word if that is what really happened.
