Okay, so a few things I observed about Buckethead:

A. He's weird.

B. He't tall.

C. I think he has a few drinks before going onstage.

D. He's pretty good!

I went to see him last night, and that was a pretty interesting show. I can't quite figure out what he's doing with his guitar when he's hitting some button on it with all of this flange and wah delays.

And I think I would have a pretty hard time moving around and playing with a mask on my face. Maybe he wasn't drinking...

Interesting, to say the least. If he's coming near any of you guys, go check him out.

Im about 90% sure that the button is a kill switch. I believe it stops the signal to the output jack. Push the button, you get no sound. Kinda interesting, isn't it?

It is a momentary kill switch. 30 cents of hardware and you´re there.
same thing some people do with the Les Pauls when on PUP is turned off and they switch the toggle on and off.

He is playing tonight in Atlanta at the Variety Playhouse.

Too bad i'm not going :(.

I did get to see him a few months ago, though. Amazing show!

I think it's pretty cool how he used the existing four holes the Les Paul comes with to add in the kill swtich, pickup switch and keeping the other two for vol and tone.

Pretty clever.

He's just amazing as a player... wish we would drop the silly act though. ;)

Agreed, but the persona he's created plays a big part in his popularity I think. His look has grown on me, he looks the coolest when he's playing his flying V. I have one of his CDs, Monsters and Robots, and unfortunately, the music wasnt as memorable as his image.. but there's no denying those monstrous chops!

Ok...I'm not sure what to say about the guy. I won't be mean, but I didn't see anything that made me want to go see him live. Here's a segment from a show I caught on PBS a while back. It just didn't impress me - and as you guys mentioned, he seems pretty fond of his kill switch...oh...and his nunchuckas ???

I think I'm going to keep one of the boxes the next time my kids have a McD's, and take to the stage at my next gig as - 'Happy Meal Head'!

What do you think?:D

I've never really understood the whole 'gimmick' thing. Regardless of whether he's a great player or not, it's got to be hard to see, move, get cool, etc., on stage with all that crap on your head. I go to see players play, I don't really go for the fancy 'show'. I guess that's one of the reason I have no interest in pop shows - they spend WAAAYY too much time on the dancing, lights, etc., and the actual talent (if any) you came to see ends up being secondary - or lip synced.

I waited to see him on that same PBS episode and didn't care for his "out there" playing. I liked his playing better in a band situation ala Axel Rose/GNR.

Wow, a thread I started got resurrected...

The more I think about it, the Buckethead show I went to was a really good one. I was pretty impressed with the whole thing: his playing, the sound, audience response, etc. Considering this is in a venue that holds about 400 people.

Over the past few years, I have gone to see a lot of people at this place (I just saw Eric Johnson last weekend) and the Buckethead show is one that stands out.

P.S. The bassplayer for the opening act was playing a Bongo, just for you MM Bongo fans.

You know, you can say what you want about Buckethead and his various eccentricities, but the fact remains that he's a monster player. Monster. And he can play ANYTHING. Personally, I think he's the illegitimate love child of Frank Zappa and Steve Vai - his talent is just sick!

oh buckethead... when are you going to start playing GOOD guitars?

you haven't seen anything until you've seen how ABSURDLY popular he is over here on monster island. when atomic monsters aren't konocking over buildings: you'd think buckethead was.

the last time I saw him, someone set my wife's hair on fire with their joint. it was troubling. but buckethead gave her a stuffed easter chick that peeps when you squeeze it's tummy. that was equally disturbing.

what makes me sad is the sheer voume of people (outside of japan) who have no clue that he was recording anything prior to the release of Monsters and Robots. the stuff he was doing in the early 90's was terrifyingly unreal.

for a fantastic listen, check out the ORIGINAL version of Jonas Hellborg's Octave of the Holy Innocents. I prefer it greatly to the remaster.
