Thanks for the info! I need to find a ruler and find out what my exact measurements ended up being - but I definitely agree with your description of the tonal result.
you are welcome bro,VH liked his pups set away from the strings and always direct mounted for the best resonance.
many others say that there is no difference in mounting a pup in a ring or right into the wood of the guitar:rolleyes:
time to get thier ears checked:D LOL!!!

Ok, I've come to a realization recently (only took a decade or so :D) and I'm looking for others' opinions before I decide if I'm on track or completely nutso.

I have two EVH's and an Axis. One of the EVH's outshines the other two by a wide margin, tone-wise. An interesting difference between all of them? The pickups in the "good" EVH are significantly lower (closer to the body) than on the other two guitars...by a good 1/16" and more. My feeling is that this is causing the difference in tone. Lower pickups = slightly lower output, more definition, less harsh, etc.
o, you guys and gals who have one or more of these guitars and a fine ruler, I'd be interested to know:
hey ratter do me a favor? take a measurment on the "good sounding" EVH guitar on the pups? i am curious if that one is set to VH specs?

I am just bumping this thread to ask my question since it is relevant,
on the EVH and axis what are the exact pu heights? taking a measurement from the bottom of the string to the top of the stud pole of the pu with the string fretted at the last fret? I had a axis and the strings were pretty far from the pups
I may have to call customer service but maybe someone here will know?

An EQ right after the guitar, before the amp/pedals, etc. can not only change the flavor of the pups, but can raise output as well to whatever degree you wish, essentially "raising the height of the pups" without actually raising them. Gives my ASS a little more bite.....I just boost the output just a little bit,...too much and it getss harsh.....also, I have the EQ shaped as a mid-boost, dropping the extreme low and high slightly below normal. Try it out.
