I have two words for you...

DO IT!!!!!!

I just got my Petrucci back from Jon and I cannot believe the difference.

I had the neck sealed so that it won't be subjected to the humidity swings that happen in these parts of the country.

I've read other reviews of people (OC) who have had their necks sealed and you can't imagine it until you play it. Nice "satiny" sheen that's just as smooth as silk. You can hardly tell that there is anything on the neck at all.

Jon said he'd send it back playing like butter and it does. Low, low action... no fret buzz.

Thanks again Jon!!!

:D

How much does something like this cost? How long does it usually take to get your instrument back?

I'll have to let Jon fill you in on the particulars. I had mine done as part of a warranty issue.

When I called originally to have it done, (before the issue with the neck came up) I believe he quoted me something like $40 for the neck seal and maybe $60 if he had to dress the frets up. Don't quote me on this though.

Seeing what I have now, it would be cheap at twice that price. Slickest neck I've ever played and it's sealed to prevent any warping issues.

I'm new to this.
What is the purpose of having the neck sealed? Improve playability? Longer life span?

Is this an option when ordering new?

I had the pimp job done on my silo special when I had the body replaced because it had a stress crack, the neck does feel great and it has stayed clean on the back of the neck since i got it back -

I am seriously considering having this done to my JP6. How do we get in touch with Jon to get this ball of wax rolling?

Help me out here - what exactly do we mean by 'sealed'? Are we talking about a good oil and wax job, or do we actually have the option of getting the neck actually finished with a satin poly coating or something? I have to admit, this raw neck thing is the ONLY, and I mean ONLY, thing I don't like about my JP6. I would much rather have the nice satin finish that I have on my cheap Ibanez neck - smooth, silky and easy to keep clean.

If there really is a satin finish option, I'm in...where do I sign up? Then my JP6 would be PERFECT in every way!!!

It's a finish over the neck in place of the oil and wax. I believe I remember Jon saying in an old thread that it's actually thinned out "Super Glue" or something to that effect. The neck is sealed and the problem with the humidity becomes a non-issue.

I called Ernie Ball Customer Support at 1 866 823-2255 and asked for a return authorization and told them what I wanted. Apparently it's a pretty common thing to have done.

All of my guitars will be done this way from here on out. I'm sending my Silhouette back next week and I'll even send back my new Morse Y2D after it arrives.

It is a superglue and acetone mix. It basically seals the neck. This is what Jon does for JP's guitars as I am told. Same with the set up. I have played OC's axe done this way and it is just phenomenal! Jon is the man. I am still debating as to having him do it for me if he is not too busy. You are a lucky man!

Keep in mind fellas, just like the oil/wax rub...it will wear off with frequent play...Koogs played my DG that had this done on a few occasions recently, and about half to 70% of the neck is raw again (what can I say...I love that guitar!) and I had it done less than a year ago as per of a body replacement...

No...consider the friction of your hand rubbing on a neck...satin finishes wear out...it just takes longer....that being said the feel of the seal is awesome....I need to get the technique down for doing this myself so I can refresh it every so often and keep JS's workload to a min...hehe...

Speakin' of which....Jon, if you're out there....hit me up I have a question for you!!!

Later on Gents,

Jon Z.

Why don't they do this to all their guitar in place of standard finish?
My Axis Super Sport which is on order should be at it's final stage. Could I get it "sealed" if that's so good?
Thanks

Sealing the neck is not something we do on production guitars. Oil and wax is a great treatment for our necks, and the sealing is generally done on request from people who live in areas where temp etc causes the neck to be a bit unstable. I hear people saying they love the feel of the sealed neck, but I can make an oil and waxed neck feel the same by using very fine grit sandpaper before the wax goes on.

If you have a neck that is unstable, cool. Have it sealed and it will help the neck stay a bit more stable. If it's the feel you want, you can do it yourself with 1200 grit paper and gunstock wax.

How do you know if the neck is unstable?

When you constantly have to adjust the action on your guitar because the next bows back and forth (expands and contracts) with changes in humidity and heat.

It's still not tooo clear to me on why ErnieBall would not use "sealed" method on all their guitars. I mean that is if sealing only has Pros and no Cons, why not just seal'em all and not worry about who might need the finish and who don't.

Is there any draw back of sealing the neck?
