Basically what the title says. After having no luck with my Sub1 rewiring, and playing a guitar with single coils today and loving the tone, I was wondering if EBMM sells pickguards, Silo Special in particular, that are already loaded with pups and wired and everything? If so, I have a couple questions.

How would you order one? Would a Silo Special pickguard fit the Sub1? Is there any soldering required? I'd think there would be for a ground and the input jack, but anything else? IIRC I remember reading that there's no soldering required. Lastly, do they come in Blue Swirl :) ?

Thanks!

yes contact Pete DuBaldo and he will hook you up

I thought they sold them but I wasn't sure, thanks! I'm sure they're probably the same anywhere because it's not actually an instrument, but how much do these usually cost? I'll edit this if prices on them isn't allowed to be discussed.

Yeah but a Silo Special gaurd will have three pickups and Subs are only routed for two.

Right on. Best if you can remove your existing pick guard of your sub, check for pickup routes on body, as well as any provision of the molex connector.

I believe jamminjim has done it and there is a thread he made with a step by step. There is definately no molex connector on the sub but that is a minor issue.

I remember when Raz (forumite who's not here anymore) did this to his Sub. I gave him a Silo Special p/g I'd set up with Bill Lawrence p'ups.

To make it fit he had to rout for a middle single. The kind of thing you can either do yourself or get a local tech to do. You'll also want to shield the cavity when you're done to keep things quiet ... copper tape is inexpensive and does the trick.

As Colin says, I've got the Molex part #s, you can order them from Mouser or any online supplier. Or you can just solder the new p/g in, it's only going to be two wires (or three if you get a Silent Circuit, but then you'll need to put a battery in the compartment or trem cavity).

Or ... you can keep the Sub as-is (it's a great instrument after all) and instead pick up a Silhouette Special or AL :)

What's the problem with the sub rewiring? After doing my Sublhouette, I overly researched everything about pickup wiring and went over the top with the redo. What are you looking to do that's not working out? I still have my notes on wire colors and did my own testing to figure out which colors went to which coils on each hum.

DaPatrooch - I'm disappointed you weren't able to fix the wiring problem. Do you have a friend that can read the thread and fix it for you?

How about you send it to me and I'll fix it for you. I'd do that no sweat, just PM me.

My blackie is routed for a single coil in the center, and its not hard if you have experience with woodworking, drills and routers and can be real careful. Its also helpful to have a set of forstner bits. You have to take the whole guitar apart to rout the single coil cavity, this is because the neck would be in the way of the router, and you don't want to expose the neck to possible damage. The molex connectors are available from CS. If you want to go with SSS setup you'll most likely have to rout the bridge cavity depth out a little.
My routing wasn't perfect in any way, but it works well and you don't see the cavity with the guard on, so.... I drilled two 3/4" or 1" holes first with the forstner bit then taped on a straight guide edge and hand routed it out. Used 3M double sided tape to attach the straight piece of wood on the body temporarily. It's not hard, but one slip with the router can ruin your day... (wouldn't it be nice if everyone had a CNC machine in their garage.. ) ;)

Alternatively, a Sub1 that has a Silo Spec HSS guard in it is a monster. I really really LOVE mine, it's as good as a SS in every way except for the finish and body contours, but I look at it this way; Steve Morse doesn't need body contours, so neither do I. I know some of you will say "he's rationalizing" and of course I am, but on the flipside, I have a Sub1 Special and not many people can say that.

+1. Your black pearl Sub is awesome, fella.

A tastefully modded Sub opens up lots of possibilities.

I added a molex connector to mine; you might as well if you're already in there :)

I had my Sub routed nearer the bridge for a SM-Y2D styled layout:

Seems completely 'rational' to me. If YOU love the guitar, that is all that matters.

Jamminjim, thanks for the offer! My good friend's brother is pretty good with this stuff, I know he's done a couple pickup changes on his guitars. I'll see if he can help me out sometime this week. If it doesn't work out I'll shoot you a PM :)

I am still interested in this though, but I think I'll wait a bit before I get one.
