When I saw that TheShreddinHand was selling off his spot for an Emerald JPX, through DuBaldo, I knew I just had to jump on it. I missed my chance when I could have ordered one myself. And if that isn't bad enough, immediately after I paid for the guitar, he tortures me by telling me he will be parting with his JPX-7 as well. So I'm just sitting there thinking, "Damn it. Now I have to buy it."
...So I did.
I absolutely love the purple color of the JPX-7. And it looks fantastic with it's green sibling.
I have had several JPs in my life, but none of them felt very "me." No matter how slick and silky the oiled maple necks feel on the regular Petrucci's, I never seemed to bond with them. These two guitars feel very "me." I am super happy to have been able to move guitars money around to end up with these two in the end. I think I am done with selling/buying guitars for a while (one can hope, that is
)
I have provided a few photos of the Emerald Green JPX's body at slight angle changes, so you can see how reactive this color is from the colors of the reflections bouncing off of it. It can look anywhere from a dark emerald to a bright neon green. The metal flake in the paint is quite a bit larger than in the JPX-7. This makes sure the guitar sparkles in any lighting, and it looks fantastic.
The JPX is getting Bare Knuckle Black Hawks, but I am also considering a BKP upgrade for the JPX-7. Does anyone else with a JPX7 have a personal recommendation? I prefer much more bitey neck pickup than what is currently in there. Something like a Cold Sweat or VHII. For a bridge pickup in a 7, I like tight, fast low end, with a mid-range snarl and sweet highs. John Petrucci has a great sound, and I love their music but I am not Petrucci.
I am aware that what I described can apply to many of the BKP's, so I would like to hear anyone's thoughts if any of you have experience with other pickups in JPX's. Right now, I am considering a Ceramic Nailbomb bridge and a Cold Sweat neck.
Here's a prog/metal sound clip of the JPX7 I recorded the other day:
