Yeah, Brad and my old guitar player (Raul Quesada; Sheila E. and Pete Escobar's cousin) from The Sun Kings (Beatle covers) are buds from all the way back in the day in the Bay Area. They've shared several bands together, and Raul still regards him highly!

Just thought I'd throw that at ya', Steve. :D

Hey Sean,

Alejandro Escovar (sp?) came to KPSU to do an in-studio about '97 or so.....great guy, excellent songwriter. Our music director brought him in (she's the same one who booked Death CAb for Cutie for a KPSU event back around the same time).

Alejandro (uncle of Sheila E and relative of your old guitar player ) had just put out a live CD (I think it was live) - really great acoustic songs, great singer songwriter stuff.

Not really hair metal, but was anybody else into Blackfoot? Bluesy southern rock, with an edge. They did a Freebird/Green Grass and High Tides type tune called Highway Song with an extended outro solo. The frontman/guitarist Rick Medlocke is in Skynyrd now. He's got....well.... had a real bluesy singing style, like he was playing guitar with his voice.

Addy! How cool! another Blackfoot fan!

I remembered them from back in the day on the radio....and then I went to hear Howard Leese's side project band in '99, just south of Seattle. They did all covers, but they were GREAT. They did Perfect Stranger by Deep Purple, The Rover, Hush, Speed King, Mean Streets (Van Halen) and I Got the Fire (Montrose)... Also excellent were renditions of Bad
Company's Ready For Love and an incredible version of Robin Trower's
Bridge of Sighs.

They did Wishing Well and it was one of those moments where I had completely forgotten about the song......and the next day I went out and bought the Best of Blackfoot.

Firehose?

"Love of a Lifetime" was the song my wife and I danced to at my wedding :)

That was the coolest thing the DJ had at the time. (cool is relative) It was either that or "Don't Stand So Close to Me" :D

Speaking of which - In the 1980's I liked the Progrock type stuff too - The Police, Asia, Rush (of Course) and YES (even Trevor Rabin 1980's YES - Changes is awesome).

Oh, man! Trevor Rabin is a genius!

I love "Shoot High, Aim Low" from the Big Generator album. There's so much cool stuff crammed into that little tune... all over top of a three note central theme.

Count me in there too... I've probably seen Blackfoot more than any other band. They were openers for a long time and then hung around the east coast in the smaller bars and I had the good fortune of seeing them many, many times. I shared a couple of beers with Ricky Medlocke one night at the Sandbar in Pasadena MD while the opening act played. Very cool guys...

Thanks Vicky, I tried to stay away from this thread  , I have a lot of great memories thinking back on the 80's that's for sure...

A little google searching turns up that Ritchie Kotzen was indeed born in Pennsylvania, but not western Pennsylvania. He was born in Reading, which is in eastern Pennsylvania.

(Pennsylvania is about 310 miles across.. roughly 495km for you metric folks.)

Favorite hair metal solos? Too many to mention. George Lynch's solo in "In My Dreams" comes to mind, I love his playing on "Kiss of Death" as well. Reb Beach is one of my faves. Winger catches alot of flack, and many of their songs were beyond cheese, but that band had some players. Reb can flat out burn with the best of 'em, and they had ex-Dreg Rod Morgenstein on drums. Dann Huff and Steve Stevens are favorites too.

Hey Fred,

Don't worry about not staying away. I feel like I'm geeking out completely, but what the hell, it's fun.

And at least I'm remembering SOMETHING these days - obviously, I'm not remembering shamus' name correctly! Oh the shame! (pun intended)! :D

Oh too funny! And I'm way embarrassed, but now we have 'pet' names for each other!

I cannot believe I am remembering you as Sean.....

I'm hard to embarrass, but I really can't remember your name right now!

That's it. I'm getting too f**king old.

I am really sorry.

*covers face with hands*

Please take pity on me and tell me your real name again. I promise I won't forget.

And the check's in the mail,
Becky
