"JF's bassist got me craving a black/maple w/tort guard"

I think that was David Santos...played with CSN last year and Billy Joel a while ago.

Great player and nice guy

M

I believe it was George Hawkins, unless something in the band has changed recently. Friend of mine techs for JF and notified me (who else!) when George got the Stingrays.

I'm not sure whether that is actually recorded with a Music Man bass. Once read an interview in a German guitar & bass magazine, where Flea stated that he actually never used a StingRay to record anything (at least from BSSM on), but did all the recording with Alembic basses, because they have a more even response over the whole fingerboard and he was able to mimic any sound he wanted. Was quite a shock for me then...
:( Sounds pretty nice on my MM either way

No doubt. It's a shame when someone like that gets to a stage in their career where the mention of them more so invokes negative associations from all the played-out & re-hashed hype surrounding them for so long, rather than genuine responses to their music itself. Yeah, I'm kind of "over" Flea, myself, but when I deliberately forget about all the hype, and listen to any one of the tunes I mentioned, or one of many others, I remember all over again what I liked so much about him.

But what was interesting about this thread for me is that it made me realize that not alot of the bassists of bands I listen to, play EBMM's, oddly enough. But I'm sure there are more that I'm just not thinking of without putting more thought into it.

Hype and overhype aside, I'm just not entirely sure I'd believe what he says about what he used and what he didn't.

You know what I mean.

Hype or no hype I never really cared for what he thought. I can listen to Tony Levin or Dave LaRue and hear plenty of bass playing I would like to be able to do.

Of course I am getting old. LOL

but all my dogs got flea collars just in case.

Yes..."NO DOUBT"...Tony Kanal would strap on a Black and Tort SR5....and Gail Ann Dorsey player for Bowie...an early Bongo Player...

If that is the case then I'd like to throw this one in:

You Ought To Know - Flea (Alanis Morisette)

Absolute killer bass line IMO.

Yeah, perfect example of an EBMM player who was slipping my mind - Tony from No Doubt. I've never bought one of their cd's, but I did really enjoy a show of theirs I went to with a friend who had an extra ticket. Very dynamic band. Gwen really knows how to get the crowd into it.

I love Gwen! Bought all the CDs from No Doubt I could get my hands on.... but I did not know Tony plays MM basses!!! I always thought he totally rocks, but it would be cool if he'd play 'rays... :D ...time to revisti that CD collection...

Another one I'm not sure it is played on an MM Sterling, but thought so from the sound:

The Seventh Seal - Michael Anthony (Van Halen)

It's not funky or anything, just straight rock but it kicks ass... Michael did the "play 16th for a whole song" long before others tried that... IMO one of the most underrated bass players in rock music.

Yeah, there are of course MANY MANY great bands, songs & bass lines that are straight up rock & are not funky, and many of those bass lines are played on EBMM basses. The SR5 is THE studio bass, because of its great versatility.

But Oli, I gotta call you on one point - I don't think I've ever heard Michael Anthony play a 16th note. He's the master of playing roots in 8ths for an entire song. Yeah, not flashy at all, but come on ... when you're in a band with Eddie & Alex Van Halen, your job is to be the foundation for these guys to do their acrobatics on. They know they can venture as far away from that steady pulse as they want & it'll be there waiting when they get back.

But I'm not being entirely honest here. I don't know why I always think I need to be so diplomatic. When it comes to Van Halen, I'm the opposite of how Jack feels about RHCP. I always loved Van Halen ... never liked Michael Anthony.
