I spent a few hours yesterday cleaning, oiling and waxing my amber Axis' neck. I took the neck off the guitar as it definately made life easier for turning it around / over while working on it.

I spent longest with Murphy Oil Soap as the fretboard was showing too much mojo (as some call it around here!) :D I got about 99% of the staining out of it.

Next I put on 1 coat of oil, left it to soak for 5-10 mins before buffing it off (I didnt have the resistance that the guy in the 1st post mentioned but it definately brought out the wood grain), then I applied one coat of wax which I then buffed with a rag until dry and shiny.

Refixed the neck onto the body, restrung and played!

Result : Clean, pretty and super fast neck...the wax in particular makes a huge difference to the feel factor and is definately recommended.

Since I'm in the UK I had to order the Birchwood Casey tru-oil and gunstock wax from www.gunshop.co.uk, I got the murphys oil soap on a recent trip to the US. I'm sure there are other wood / wood floor cleaners out there us Europeans could use instead of murphys if it came to it...

Wow.....truely a thread from the dead.

For anyone looking to do this treatment, it's actually dead easy. I buy, fix and make better a cheap kinda guitar that's made a bit south of SLO and my first things to do are remove the neck, level and crown the frets, round over the fingerboard edges (as best can be done with frets in place) and strip the finish off the back of the neck. I then apply one coat of tru oil with a clean paper towel. Let it sit for 45 seconds and wipe off. Then do that again. Wait overnight and wax with a carnauba car wax. I've done a dozen or so and they are far superior to any lacquer or poly finished neck I've ever played.

Oooooo....very old thread.
What was I doing back in 2004?
:)

Question for you, Jack:
Lets say wanted rounded fretboard edges too...& I wanted stainless steel frets..
Would it me better for me to remove the nickel frets, then round fretboard edges, then insert stainless frets?
Also, if I were to remove the frets, guess it would be a good time to do the wax & oil treatment (before stainless installation), allowing me to oil & wax fretboard too?
Does MM oil & wax their fretboards or just the backside of the necks?
Thanks,
Jon
