Well, my esteemed friends, we seem to be in speculation territory.

C'Mon BP, give us the low down baby....

Wow... That's ballsy - I mean expecting to "rename" the Stingray as opposed to, say, developing a new model with his name...

A Stingray by any other name would still sound as sweet...

If i remember right.

flea wanted the stingray to be called the flea bass, and he wanted a cut of all future sales of the model and partial design control.

this all comes back to his name being a commodity, a lesser brand (cough;modulus;cough), would bow to these demands.

that's what I seem to remember hearing.

i could be wrong

Well, I think calling Modulus a "lesser brand" is stretching it a bit. Perhaps "lesser known brand that could grab more market share with a high profile artist as a signed endorsee" might be a bit closer...

As for the rest of the allegations, I'd really like to hear from the good folks at EB before I participate in character assassination like this post does. I really, really find it hard to believe that he wanted the ENTIRE line named after him, AND a cut on all future sales, AND design input. I would think a demand like that would be met by Big Poppa with more than a "C'Ya later"--ie a Stingray neck up the flea-hole.

I hear a lot of things. Most of which are said by people with no real clue as to what happened in any given situation. (Not meant as a dig at Joel. I just know how this "I heard that" game works--Remember, Spicoli pulled a knife on Mr. Hand, right?:p ).

At this point, it appears that no one besides Derek is going to chime in. Perhaps it's best that this thread be closed now since it's simply idle speculation and dragging Flea's name through the mud with no basis of fact.

Flea is a nice person. I always had a good relationship with him. I didn't have a good relationship with his attorney.....

If Flea and I sat down I will tell you that he might be surprised.

I will tell more at the open house but if it gets spread your dead\

He used Stingrays on almost all of the rhcp....where did you get that bull****?

was it a quote after he left for modulous?

That would be great . . Flea is a down-to-earth guy and
I would be good to see him again w/a MusicMan in hand.
Perhaps signing his name on a single pup stealth Bongo :p
I gotta admit that he influenced my decision to check out
StingRays over a decade ago. .

Thanks BP, I sure hope I can make it to the Open House
. . my lips are sealed.

Freak'n lawyers! . . . not you Gav ;)

I too must admit that Flea led me to MM, though I think it was unconscious. I was always trying to get my basses to sound like the bass on BloodSugarSexMagic - then finally picked up a MM and thought, DMAN! My Sound! The sound I was always looking for!

This seems to be a common experience... The "wow - MY sound" discovery with EBMM basses. I know it was for me as well with my Sterling... :)

I've never understood the fuss about Flea. He doesn't impress me at all. I guess I'm the only one... :(

Flea is just flat out a funky dude. He's not the fastest or most technical but he introduced bass with an attitude to a new generation of bassists. Flea was one of my first bass heros and has written some very tasty lines in his day. He'll always get respect from me for not holding back and playing each note like it's his last. I'm not as big a fan of the last couple albums the R.H.C.P's have released but still think they are a great band. One Hot Minute is my personal favorite.

I'll have to check him out. I've heard several of their songs, but never clicked for me.

Being a nuclear-whanking bassist is not a requirement to do it for me. ;)

Yeah, I too came into the MM camp through Flea (I was young and thought that super slap wanker stuff was the shiznit :p). I don't listen to their stuff much these days, but I do enjoy going back to their old stuff once in a while (like Mother's Milk and One Hot Minute) to hear that neat punk-funk-rock thing Flea has going on.

Once Bovinehost gets back, we'll have to stop all this Flea-chatter. :p

I used to see them gig around LA back when pterodactyls were still a common danger. Long before a record deal. They did some funny stuff and I thought Flea was a good player....although I'd long since had a Stingray. I like to think it was MY influence that caused him to pick up a Stingray.

I like to think that, mind you, but it isn't true.

Anyway, he certainly isn't in my top ten favorite bassists ever, but I suppose he did cause a big ruckus when people started listening to him. I can appreciate that.

I just wish to hell they'd someday give him a Bass Player cover story.

I think the bass he used on that record was a Wal from what I have read (perhaps an old BP mag laying around?) The punch and growl on "Suck My Kiss" is definately not the same type of punch and growl a 'Ray has IMO. Plus, on the Funky Monks video shows him recording w/ the Wal.

on bssm he used an SR5 for "funky monks"
an SR4 for "give it away" and "under the bridge" and "Naked in the rain"
Specters were used for most of the record
wals were used on some tracks and for some of the overdubbed solos

but all this talk about him switching to modulus, who cares what bass someone plays? I met this dude from, virgil donati band the other day (virgl is the best drummer in the world, 600 kicks per minute), anyway, the bassist is sponsered by ibanez, and when i walked up to him ater the show and asked if he had tryed a stingray. Turns out he wants to play them live but cant becauseof his deal with ibanez.

perhaps flea might want to play stingrays live, but he is forced by contract into playing modulus...?

I really dislike the sound of spectors for some reason. Too high tech and sizzly for me - at least any one I've ever played. Don't know nuthin about Wals, but I do know my Sterling sounded a hell of a lot like the bass on Mellowship Slinky, and the sound I was "unconsciously" looking for.

Not sure why some people knock Flea. He seems to me to have his head in the right place, seems pretty damn humble about what he does, and I don't think anyone can deny he's a butt kickin player. He always gives credit to his influences, admits to his wanking in earlier days, and easily inspired hoards of players over the years.

I DO understand the youger folk saying, "I don't see what's so great about this guy." I battle with the last 2 albums. I respect their growth and change of direction, but I LOVED everything they did up till then. I work at loving loving the 2 new CDs. By The Way has some redeeming qualities, I really don't like Californication. Two of my bestest favoritest flea parts aren't even on any of their albums - "Soul to Sqeeze", and don't kick me... Alanis Morrisette's "Oughtta Know". I think there's a lot of love expressed in his playing.

Last note: I saw The RHCPs when Frusciante just got back in the band in the Bowery Ballroom (which holds 300 people) a few years back. Was the first to walk in the door and immediately glued myself to the front of the left side of the stage. :) Watching Flea for an hour a foot and a half away from me gave me complete licence to go berzerk on stage and not worry about the notes. I'd so much rather watch someone go nuts and mess up like crazy than stand there and bore me playing every note perfectly. That's what I got the CDs for. Flea messes up like crazy. It's so much fun to watch. :D
