I'm 43 and have been playing since I was 20. Started off in a garage jamming with another guitarist doing ACDC. PLayed in some cover bands and a few orig bands. Haven't gigged in over 10 years, since the kids came along. Now I mostly doodle into my Zoom 505 into Pc while hacking on the web.

Well I'm in there with a few of you. I've been messing around off and on since I was 20. Sold off all of my equipment an then fell in love with the EBMM SS and it started all over again.

So total like 4 year. There was a HUGE break in there, if you can do the math, I'm 41.

I'm 35 now, been playing since I was 12. What's that.. 23 years? Wow! There was a period of about 2 years in the mid 90's when I didn't play at all.. still I don't think I lost much technique during the downtime.

Wow, it's been 23 years. I have really been wood shedding it for the past 4 years, ever since hearing Mr. Petrucci. I should have been this dedicated when I was 16.

Ya know ... i honestly dont think i actually "practiced" for YEARS and YEARS. after my initial learning curve i noodled a lot and have been writing songs n stuff but never really "practiced". So the last few weeks ive been kicking my own ass and practicing a lot ... going thru all sorts of painful exercise over and over again. Sounds obvious and silly to say but I totally forgot how much that stuff helps.

I hear that! Big difference between practicing and playing

5 1/2 years of playing, I'm 20. Damn I have to practice more, recently I've noticed that I'm only noodling around when I pick my axe. I hope it will change when I'll pick up my Petrucci:)

lets see - I'll do the math:

2005 - 1981 = 24 years (holy s**t I'm old)

I'm 38 years old, I started when I was 13.

I Played 4-6 hours a day through the 1980's and early 1990's, worked professionally in metal bands most of that time. I also had a weird jazz side project for 5 years of that- sound like Spinal Tap? Of course I never opened for a Parrot show. :D

Went from Lounge Lizard to Living Room Lizard in 1995 - the bottom dropped out of the "talented hard rock musicians market" in favor of grunge and heroin driven muddy distortion. Became professional computer geek instead.

Now I play 4-6 hours a week or so for the last 10 years, but my fans are more loyal. (Wife, Children and Friends)

My daughter has picked up the torch now and wants to be a hard rock guitar player.

Excuse my rambling - this thread got me thinking.

30 years give or take
Took my first lessons at about age 13 which lasted about a year or two but I was never dedicated.
As with several people here, I took a long time off and just started picking it up again over the past year or so. I actually started lessons again to make it worth the effort. I'm still working up the nerve to try and play with/for other people. I know it would help me get better, its just the insecurity hump I need to hurdle.
I've been genuinely impressed with the overall talent level of people on this board, both through seeing them at the open house and listening to their posted clips. It can be both daunting and inspiring.
At his point I'll just keep on plugging away for fun. But there is just something satisfying when your daughter walks in the room and says "Daaaddddyyyy, that's too loud" :)
