Also, that cryogenic nonsense... what's up with that?

It's a hyper freezing method, supposed to align molecules of metal. Callaham offers it on certain parts, included on Fralin pickups. I have no idea if it actually does anything with guitar parts, but I know for certain it can improve accuracy of target/varmint rife barrels.

.009s stiff on JP6

I'm glad I found other players who experience the same phenomenon w/ the JP6.
After playing for 34 years with mainly Strats, Pauls ,Washburns, Kramers, and Ibanezes, I found that bending strings on my JP6 w/ .009s feels like when I started playing in '73 and didn't know that strings came in gauges so the local shop put .012s (!!) on my guitar and sent me home to practice my JimmyPage riffs!! Don' get me wrong, it is a very comfortable axe to play and it forces you to do warm-ups properly. However, it is a guitar that I look at and say to myself "how much of a good workout do I want today?"

a .009 or any string for that matter will have the exact same amount of pounds per suare inch when brought to pitch on any of our guitars as they all have the same scale length. (same as all fenders too) What you are experiencing is the thinner neck for some does not give an "anchor point" for stability for some players hence the feeling that the tension is higher.

I could win many bets with you guys on this It is basic physics.

Count me out too. But I am curious about tension differences between hardtails and vintage trems, if there is any difference or if it's just perception.

Physics is physics, you can't cheat it. Sort of like gravity. The tensions will be the same assuming identical setups.

The difference with hardtails and trems is when you go to bend the strings. A hardtail won't give. Depending on your trem setup, it will give and thus making the bend a little easier.

That could open up a whole other discussion though. Are string bends more accurate on a hardtail which gives you two fixed points? Theoretically you'd have to bend it farther on a trem in order to hit the correct pitch because one of the anchor points is moving and effectively lowering the pitch of the string at one end while you are trying to raise it at another.

My brain hurts, it's too early in the morning for such philosophical thoughts on wankage ;)

My trems are locked down tight, no give whatsoever on bends - but they still feel easier to bend strings than on a hardtail model of the same guitar. Yet I've heard others say exactly the opposite.

Ok. THIS I understand. Doesn't explain the differences in different brand strings on the same guitar though, but that's just me. I'll go back to my cave and meditate on these points... maybe I'll be able to come up with a formula for making 0.13s feel like 0.8s!!! :D

This thread sort of reminds me of the time Callaham, John Suhr and Mike Eldred were debating on the differences in steel blocks on the Fender Discussion Page...

White strat

here is a better way to explain try bending strings on a neck without having your hand on the back of the neck. The anchor point Im referring to is where the hand rests on the back of the neck. A meatier neck will give some additional support

70 degree water can feel really cold if its hot outside and really warm if its cold but it is still 70 degrees......It feels what it feels to you

Is that like the old "which weighs more, a ton of lead or a ton of feathers"? .........

'Frustrated' update

I bought it on a whim on ebay knowing I can resell it easily here in the NY Metropolitan area and the wait to order one is at least 3 months! I am a big fan of Petrucci's style and have been buying guitars off auction sights with great
satisfaction so the curiosity factor was big. I'm a strat player anyway, so this guitar, the more I play it, is definitely growing on me. I do all my own set-ups so sometimes it just takes a little experimenting to achieve a comfort zone when changing string gauge, action etc. when you find a guitar that has good 'bones' or sounds like something you'd really enjoy to play. Hey kids, I'm 47 years old and I'm still learning new things about guitar so you see it never gets boring, just a little frustrating sometimes, BTW, took my son w/ me to see DT 4 nights ago-
Unbelievable!! Putting new spins on oldies, that Jordan has a strap-on keyboard that lets him come stagefront and center and jam w/ JP doing all those cool harmony riffs! Catch them if they come to your area.... Peace

I may be wrong but regular JP`s come with 10`s and BFR`s are setup with 9`s, but since I am a 9-42 type of guy I asked Pete and Nick to set my new JP up with 9`s and what a KICK ASS job they did it is just unreal how well it plays not one problem, this whole set up thread needs to go away, not one ball I have played or owned has had a problem of any type, I personally think it is the player not the axe:D
