Man...I feel like a dofus.

Turns out there was nothing wrong with the guitar electronics at all...it was the stupid cable I was using! I normally don't use this particular cable that I tested the SUB1 with, but it was at the top of my gig bag so it happened to be the first one I pulled. I woke up this morning and the first thing I thought was, "Hmmm...wonder if that cable is bad?". Turns out it was!

I LOVE the stock SUB1 pickups now! They're the perfect balance. The bridge is real crunchy and the neck has a nice creamy quality to it. No more plans to mod the pickups for now! I'd like to put some push/pull pots but I think I'm going to stop there.

All I need now is the new pickguard & a trem arm and I'll be set.

The best part of this whole deal is that I only gave $275 for the guitar. Heck of a steal, in my opinion.

Way to goGoKart... for that money and some elbow grease you got a great guitar to enjoy. From what I hear from people on here the std SUB pups are pretty damn good.

Great write up & pics. Great post. Thanks.

Very clean.

Good effort, great results. Black pearloid will look ace too.

Adding a single coil towards the bridge is a top idea. I had my Sub routed to add a DiMarzio Area '61.

Poplar. Not real good for clear finishes. Doesn't have the nicest grain, and has a yellowish-green hue to it. Sounds close to Alder I guess.

5) First mod...remove serial number sticker and set aside for sanding!

Hey, nice job here - getting ready to do the same, but have a couple of questions...

Did you have much trouble getting the serial number sticker off the headstock, and more importantly, how did you re-attach it? I'm assuming you stuck it back on after the oil/wax stage, right?

No, no trouble at all really. Just go very slow and work the razor blade around 2 of the corners and "rock" it back and forth. It'll slide right off.

There was still lots of adhesive left on the sticker after I removed it, so I just stuck it right back on and applied pressure. Yes, this was done after oil/wax had dried.
