Yep, get something that has great clean and then drive it with a pedal or two. As mentioned, the Blues Junior isnt bad.

I just tried out a used Marshall MG30 at Daddy's in Shrewsbury, MA that was recently traded in with the pedal. I really like it for it's clean tones and simplicity of adjustments. They wanted $119 if I remember correctly. Just big enough to put out some volume but light enough to carry in one hand with the guitar in the other hand.

I may be convincing myself to go buy this thing myself.....:D

Can't beat a modeling amp like Fender's Mustangs or what I have, a Peavey Vypyr Tube 60, for practice or if you're in a cover band. Tons of great tones and they're typically pretty lightweight aside from the Tube ones.

New HT5 has more clean headroom as it has a 12" speaker as opposed to the 10" on the old one. It is a lot better

Personally, I didn't think there was anything wrong with 10" speaker in the older HT5 (it's the same speaker in my LC15 and the cleans are great on that amp) but unfortunately the cleans on the old HT5 were just dull and uninspiring (but yes, the dirt channel was great!). I must try the 12" version someday!

Practice amp means different things to different people, so I'd say the feature set is important. (Channels, loop, voicing, yada yada yada.)

My pick for a light, cheap head is the Jet City JCA20H. Sounds great stock, or with one of the available mods. Personally I like a head + 1x12 for portability (carry one in each hand).

Gio,

Have you considered a used Peavey Classic 20? I used one for years as a practice amp. Are you playing through a PA at practice? I see you're in Rhode Island. I'm also there today. Just visited Ross Music; they're next to my hotel. I was disappointed to find no Balls there.

I suggest to find a used blues junior and take a skeleton pedal board (i.e tuner, drive, delay). Light and still reacts to your fingers like your live rig (provided you use tubes live). Tilt the amp in practice towards your head (and everyone else) to get the most out of the volume and tone.

this was another amp I was considering.

Everyone I know that has a Blues Junior or has tried loved them. I messed around with one @ GC a while back and I loved it.

Gio, take a ride and try a bunch out man, go to Daddy's or GC and just try as many as possible. But remember to check out the used section @ GC you never know what you'll find in those places.

Hey Gio,

How about a Carvin Legacy head and a 2 x 12 cabinet? Steve Vai's amp. The 2 x 12 is a one man carry.

Lush cleans and rich distortion.

I'd take a ride or call the Daddys in Shrewsbury man. There is also the GC in Millbury, they aren't that far apart. I've been to the GC in Attleboro, it's small. You could look online at both Daddys and GC and have them bring stuff from other stores. I've had them do that before, make your trip worth while man.
