hey Janice, re; Standing in the Shadows of Motown - OMG, what a documentary that is. I cried a lot the first time I saw it. Now that I own the DVD, I've seen it a bunch of times - I still cry at the end. But hell yeah, it's a total must-see - amazing especially if you grew up on Motown, but even for someone who didn't, I think the power in it lies in the fact that the unsung heroes FINALLY got some recognition, props, and love.

Tina Weymouth is highly, highly underrated.

All of Zappa's players were something else, too, but I didn't see much from them outside of Zappa.(And Thunes had a reputation for being an a**hole.)

yeah, Tony Levin.....he's quite prolific and talented. And funny. I did a phone interview a few years ago with him, and we ended up talking about coffee and pesto recipes.

One of my favorite bassists has always been Stuart Zender (played with Jamiroquai on 3 albums I believe). I'm sure our UK friends are familiar with him. Loved his sound and the little nuances he had in their songs.

It was Geezer that made me want to start playing in the first place (1979). He's still a major influence on my note-bending technique, as well as being a finger-plucker.

Special-mention to Steve Harris, another early role model for my right-hand technique that I still utilize from time-to-time (depending on the song).

I also want to add T-Bone Wolk to the list of favorite bass players...highly overlooked!

The first time I saw Dave LaRue I said that was the best all around bassist I've ever seen. I also like Geddy Lee, if you can't hang with the voice check out La Villa Strangiato or YYZ. Peter "Mars" Cowling from Pat Travers Band is really good, and Geddy once said," Jeff Berlin is light years ahead of me." You can check out Jeff on Alan Holdsworth's Road Games, and he did a couple of good solo albums with a lot of celebrity guest artists.

Mark King from Level 42 is one superb bassist and who can forget marcus miller i see him in a bass magazine everytime a new ones out
