all because i left my what if cd in her car once ....................i yi yi.....
:p

and once was all it took. Ah, The Power of the Steve.

hey Janice, re; Standing in the Shadows of Motown - OMG, what a documentary that is. I cried a lot the first time I saw it. Now that I own the DVD, I've seen it a bunch of times - I still cry at the end. But hell yeah, it's a total must-see - amazing especially if you grew up on Motown, but even for someone who didn't, I think the power in it lies in the fact that the unsung heroes FINALLY got some recognition, props, and love.

Tina Weymouth is highly, highly underrated.

All of Zappa's players were something else, too, but I didn't see much from them outside of Zappa.(And Thunes had a reputation for being an a**hole.)

I love what Les Claypool does.

Also:
Jonas Helleborg
Tony Levin
JPJ
Chris Squire
Geddy Lee

So, let me get this straight: You think John Entwistle is a good bass player? :D

yeah, Tony Levin.....he's quite prolific and talented. And funny. I did a phone interview a few years ago with him, and we ended up talking about coffee and pesto recipes.

I like the guy from the Eagles. I've been listening to them a lot more lately than I ever did, and he just holds things together so nicely, without just riding the root the whole tim.

One of my favorite bassists has always been Stuart Zender (played with Jamiroquai on 3 albums I believe). I'm sure our UK friends are familiar with him. Loved his sound and the little nuances he had in their songs.

Greatest (or favorite) Bass Players...

The guys who have helped shape my bass playing (in no particular order):

James Jamerson
Geezer Butler
Tiran Porter
Duck Dunn
John Taylor
John Paul Jones
Rocco Prestia

All these guys laid it down, without being "shredders".

Did he lay down the bass line for "Canned Heat" (1999)?

It's outright SICK!

+1 for sure
It was Geezer that made me want to start playing in the first place (1979). He's still a major influence on my note-bending technique, as well as being a finger-plucker.

Special-mention to Steve Harris, another early role model for my right-hand technique that I still utilize from time-to-time (depending on the song).

I also want to add T-Bone Wolk to the list of favorite bass players...highly overlooked!

The first time I saw Dave LaRue I said that was the best all around bassist I've ever seen. I also like Geddy Lee, if you can't hang with the voice check out La Villa Strangiato or YYZ. Peter "Mars" Cowling from Pat Travers Band is really good, and Geddy once said," Jeff Berlin is light years ahead of me." You can check out Jeff on Alan Holdsworth's Road Games, and he did a couple of good solo albums with a lot of celebrity guest artists.

I hate to make lists because whosoever is worthy of anyone’s list has the ability to top it at any given moment. But if I must:

Dave LaRue - If you don't agree, you only have to listen
Geddy Lee – If he would just shut up and focus…
Victor Wooten – I hate to rank him
John Entwistle – John Entwistle! Who Are You?
John Paul Jones – To paraphrase shamus “This guy laid it down without being a shredder”

But heck, I’m jus’ a Guitard! What do I know?

KP, go onto the newb site and tell the story of the second show at the Coach House…The Ernie Ball All-stars, when Petrucci got his axe. I was only there for the first one

KpBasser and Zon,

Rumour has it that Dave LaRue reads this forum... isn't that cool?
Maybe you guys can help us convince him to register and join the fracas.

That would be cool indeed. This would be a great place for a fellow to introduce himself...

Imagine Dave LaRue - a newb!

I agree it would be cool if Dave joined in. There is something really cool when somebody like BP or an EB staffer replies to something. I'm sure everyone would be glad to have Dave here in the trenches.

"Sorry Pino you're not what we are looking for"
....and the rest is history!

I have no idea of best (I can't even play those humongous strings)...but I've always loved how Victor Lamonte wooten and Dave Larue sound and what they add to their respective bands.

Easily my 2 Faves
