Was thinking about this today in the car whilst listening to Floyd's "Comfortably Numb"

What would you consider to be (if this is possible) your top 5 favorite guitar (or bass) solos ever?

1/ Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (Both solos)
2/ Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries on
3/ Vai - For the Love of God
4/ Toto - Rosanna
5/ Steve Lukather - Little Wing (I think that counts)

Agree on Numb.
I always loved Page's ACHILLES LAST STAND solo.
The solo in THE GREAT SPECTACULAR by Steve Morse is close to perfection.
Jeff Beck's "Cause we ended as Lovers" maybe.
Something from Satriani has to be on the list, I'm just not sure where to start.

Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi

Hotel California - The Eagles

Still Got The Blues - Gary Moore

Overture 1928 (second solo) - Dream Theater

etc.

I can't have a list without "Freebird" on there somewhere. Maybe some SRV, Satriani and Randy Rhodes, too. I'll have to think on this one! ;)

It's been quite a while since I last listened to Selling England By The Pound. It's time to put it on and have a listen.

In no particular order:

1. Toto - Jake to the Bone (Kingdom of Desire)
2. Journey - Mother, Father (Escape)
3. Yes - Awaken (Going for the One)
4. Eagles - Hotel California (Hotel California)
5. Boston - Hitch A Ride (Boston)

Just teasing you man! ;)

I know what you're thinking - this kind of joke from the guy who put down "Freebird"? :D :D :D

OK a serious answer (and very much a current and personal opinion (based on iTunes))

1. Hotel California - The Eagles

2. Contact Lost - Steve Morse

3. Electric Gypsy - Andy Timmons

4. No More Tears - Zakk Wylde

5. Mississippi Moon - Ty Tabor (Kings X just rule)

Indeed they do! One of the best bands you never hear about unless someone you know fills you in. Glad to see someone across the pond digging them, too!

I don't know about "Greatest Solo's Ever", but some of my personal favorites are the ones that have an inherent build of energy.

Solo's that belong in the song and take you for a ride... :)

Money - Pink Floyd

Wang Dang Sweet Poon Tang - Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo version

Flirtin' With Disaster - Molly Hatchet

Die With Your Boots On - Iron Maiden - Live After Death version

Dream Theater - Under a Glass Moon
Led Zeppelin - Since I've been Loving You (Live Version)
Randy Rhoads - Mr. Crowley
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
Steve Vai - Blue Powder
Leo Kottke - Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring
SRV - Little Wing
Michael Hedges - Because it's There
Yngwie - Far Beyond the Sun

I could name about 3000 more, but that's good for starters.

Anything by Steve Morse, Vinnie Moore, and Joe Satriani. All 3 of these guys have amazing sense of melody and composition and a build up of emotion in their playing. So naturally all of their solos are freakin GREAT.
However my favourite solo recently has been by Steve Morse from The OZ on Coast to Coast.
