In No Particular Order :
These are the guys I idolised as a kid/teen..... their music is a memorable part of my past.

* Mark Knopfler ! (I May not be playing guitar if I hadn't heard Sultans at age 5 - that sound became an obsession).
* Satch
* Vai
* Lynch (Back for the Attack era)
* Slash (Appetite was a huge part of my early teens).
* Zakk.
* Steve Stevens

1) John Petrucci
2) Jimi Hendrix
3) Joe Satriani
4) Steve Morse
5) Wow...the four above were hard and I'm not sure they're in the right order...they should ALL be Number 1.

-----

So, for my Number 5, Let me add to the list the following:
Nuno Bettencourt
Lee Ritenour
Al DiMeola
Django
Eric Clapton
Eddie Van Halen
Randy Rhodes
Jimmy Page
BB King
Jerry Reed
Chet Atkins
Roy Clark
Ric Emmet
Paul Gilbert
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Andres Segovia
John Williams (the Guitarist, not the conductor/composer)
Steve Vai
Alexi Laiho
Terry Kath
Neal Schon
Warren DeMartini
Steve Howe
Alex Lifeson
George Lynch
Steve Wilson
David Gilmour
...and the List goes on. They're all exceptional and they're all my heros but to put anyone in the rat-hole of top five is nearly impossible as my tastes change from day to day.

1) Brian May - Tone, Choice of Notes, song writing....complete package!
2) John Petrucci - Just all around brilliant.
3) Randy Rhoads - After Brian, Randy was my guitarists guitar hero!
4) Zakk Wylde (particularly late 80's up to mid 90's playing) Zakk got me into heavy rock and developing my playing.
5) Steve Morse - Arguably the most accomplished guitarist on this list. Clean, articulate, tones, different styles, awesome!

Honourable Mention) Mustaine + Friedman! The songs and the solo's. Check out the solo from Tornado of Souls, it's worth its weight in gold!

Wooden Spoon: Vai & Satch - even though I barely listen to these two anymore they had a huge part in getting me into 'instrumental music' and practising a hell of a lot more than what I was at the time.

Hmmmm.... tough one. Really. But, I'm very surprised to see people having same influences as I do, even Sambora, Kotzen etc. What a bunch of phenomenal players!

Well, here we go. Not in any particular order

1.) Morse
2.) Sambora
3.) SRV
4.) Luke
5.) Kotzen / Petrucci

Of course, I love a lot more, and many different styles - from B.B. King and Buddy Guy to Petrucci and Gilbert, Tommy Emmanuel etc.

OK,

By a feat of heroic endeavour, I think I've managed to pull together 5 more that I genuinely think are great, THAT NO ONE HAS MENTIONED SO FAR! (I think)

Anyway, here goes.......

1) Steve Hackett (proper classical player too!)
2) Malcolm Young (More important to the AC/DC sound than Angus IMHO)
3) The Edge (!!!!)
4) John Mitchell (Arena/Frost - Check him out - no really!)
5) Mike Oldfield (Woefully under-apprecited as a unique guitar player)

Phew....off for a lie down now!:D

Edit: Bu**er, just noticed threeminutesboy had Hackett and Rutherford (but in brackets), ah well it was a good try!

John Petrucci
Slash
Masahiro Andoh (T-Square)
John McLaughlin
Al DiMeola

My friends describe my taste in music weird... I've been listening ONLY to DT starting from their ToT album, was quite a big GnR fan before. Got turned onto some jazz/fusion by my drummer. And I don't like metal, at all. DT is the only "metal" band I listen to. If you guys like jazz/fusion, gotta listen to some T-Square and Casiopea, both from Japan. Got attracted to the speed metal element of Mahavishnu Orchestra. Started to listen to Al Dimeola because of JP.

But my favourite guitarist of all time is John Petrucci. No one touches him.

Casiopea and T-Square performing the song Fightman.
