Hey!

The sounds I am into:

Scott Henderson, suhr guitars, custom audio amps (also suhr)

Richie Kotzen, fender+cornford amps

Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew - ...

Ty Tabor (King's x) - I don't know what instruments/amps he uses, but check out how he sounds - my bet is it's in his fingers - try "Dogman" just for the sake of example.

Not nearly as mainstream as the others mentioned on here, but I really dig the sounds Eric Friedman gets in "Hollow" by Submersed. Guessing it was with one of his PRS guitars, but no clue on the amp. I haven't heard any of the other tracks from them, but I plan on getting a copy of that disc...

Oh yeah, +1 for David Gilmour - Comfortably numb.
And how in the world could I have not mentioned Larry Carlton - Kid Charlemagne and most everything else rockish he's played. He uses Dumble amps and effects I believe.

1) David Gilmour
2) Shine on You Crazy Diamond (and at least 20 other songs that come to my mind immediately)
3) I know what he used, but don't want to use up too much space here :) Let's just say original Hiwatt Amps, Pete cornish modded pedals and everything else... (for more info - visit the excellent Gilmourish)

1) Ritchie Blackmore
2) For the 70-s Blackmore I would highly suggest his 1975' "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" Album, his electric sound of today is best captured on the "Stranger in us all", especially on "Still I'm sad".
3) Marshall amps back then, Engl Savage and Souvereign since 1995.

1) Jeff Beck
2) Roger Waters' "Amused to Death" 1992
3) don't know

1) Mark Knopfler
2) "Sultans of Swing" - "Alchemy live"
3) Don't know

1) Eric Johnson
2) Pretty much everything
3) Marshall JMP Amps, don't know anything else

1) Steve Vai
2) "The Ultra Zone" LP 1999
3) Far too much to mention, Carvin Legacy Amps, Morley Wah and Volume pedals, TC Electronic G-Force, Fireworks and G-System processors, etc, etc....

1) John Petrucci
2) "Images And Words" LP 1992
3) Mesa Boogie amps and a lot of pedals and processors...

That should do it for the starters ....

Yep. Especially Dave Gilmour. His playing can still bring a tear to my eye.

.... Trevor Rabin / 90215 & Big Generator....

Trevor Rabin claimed my all time number 1 spot long ago;, and retired the jersey too! He is solely the reason for me swapping from wind instruments to guitar many years ago. Such a great tone across all his solo and Yes work.

I look forward to new material; a simply awesome player and musician.

OK I'll enjoy this one....

Ty Tabor - everything up to Dogman had incredible tones - Fender Elite Strat into a Gibson Lab Series amp.

EVH - Van Halen I - nuff said!

Hetfield - Death Magnetic - the guy is the best metal rhythm player ever.

Angus/Malcolm - Back In Black - how good did the guitars sound?

Audley Freed - Cry of Love - Brother - just love the tones and songs on this album.

John Mayer - Slow Dancing In A Burning Room - this is how a strat should sound period.

Steve Morse - Simple Simon - he's my hero so he had to be in here somewhere :)

Larry Carlton - anything - a true great tonally and musically.

Billy Gibbons - any song - the man simply can not play a wrong note and his tones whether clean or through 5 Expandoras is amazing.

Feel free to comment ;)

Lovin' some of the posts.....great thread....

For me:

EVH - The tone from say the intro to You Really Got Me just astounded me when I first heard it!

Steve Morse - Just his variety of awesome tones both clean and dirty...

John Petrucci - Love his sound....I've managed to get pretty close on both his rythmn and lead sounds via just an old GT5 and a 4 x 12 simulator.....

Vai - ....but only when he plugs directly into a Legacy.......otherwise it can get a bit processed.....

Nuno - Love his ADA MP-1 days.....

Mark Knopfler - Alchemy Live is a classic album and his control, timing and note selection just great.....

Yngwie - He doesn't seem to care about his live sound these days...but years ago I saw him at Hammersmith and I swear his lead and rythmn tone just took your breath away.....awesome.

Eric Johnson - What a sound......

****....I gotta stop!

I can't believe I forgot Gilmour as well....Mr Tone!!

Comfortably Numb just might be the best solo ever. Also...check out his solo from "Fletcher Memorial Home" from The Final Cut....brilliant stuff!

Andy Timmons- His live tone in the past few years and the stuff on Resolution all speaks for itself. Just listen...no verbal explanation needed

Guthrie Govan- His tone on Erotic Cakes is killer, but his tone live and in most studio-setting videos I've seen is mindblowing.

Holdsworth- His lead tone on All Night Wrong is one of my favorites

Chris Poland- I haven't listen to OHM's studio recordings as much as I should, but I have a live bootleg from a show in Chicago back in '04 where his lead tone is pretty amazing.

Michael Romeo- I hated his tone until Paradise Lost...his rhythm sound on there is some of the best heavy tone I've ever heard

Scott Henderson- I'm particularly fond of his tone on the first Vital Tech Tones cd

Petrucci- His tone (clean, lead, rhythm...everything) on 6DOIT is some of my favorite tone of all time.

Paisley- His lead tone is pretty sick.
