what are you experiences with changing the original pick up and with adding one ...

love my bass, and wanted to expand it's sound abilities .... but i'm afraid to "destroy it" and not be able to go back ... :)

Thats exactly what you'll do. Put it up for trade or sell it to fund the other. You'll lose less $$ maybe even no $$ like that. Destroying the bass, going through all that time, spending for parts so it MAY work well is a pretty illogical choice

I would have to agree, trade in the bass or if buying an additional bass is an option do that... That modification would be a big job and there's no going back if you don't like the results. I've done mods and wish I hadn't so the only mods I've done to my Stingrays are fully reversible ones (3eq Stingrays hiding 2eq preamps...)

and what are your thoughts on all the MM compatible pick up from Aguilar, EMG , Nordstrand and other .... these are reversible changes .. are they worth the while?

They sound different. Some are good quality, some a bit less. But why change THE best pickup of them all to one of those and spend alot of money for no reason.

They are good options for upgrading olp basses ect. But in that case your ellectronics would be worth more than the bass itself....

Although I always have the attitude that it's your bass to do what you want with I have to go with the others on this.

Adding another pick-up would necessitate routing out the body for the extra electronics and changing every piece of the guts.
I don't know of anybody who's ever been happy with changing out the original MM electronics for aftermarkets no matter how good the quality.
If you want more sound it would be best to trade the one you have for a different bass or just buy another one and own two.
After all the cost of the mods you could very well end up canning the custom one and have to buy another one anyway.

Happy plucking! :)

Well. There was a guy on here that did a sterling single H to HH mod. It worked out verry well. But he did it before ebmm offered 2 pickup basses. Since now days they do offer stingray and sterlings with 2 pickups the best thing to do is get one of those and leave your bass alone.
