I've just replaced the saddles on my 2003 Luke II with a new set of OEM Musicman direct replacements (part #M05128) due to corrosion. I have noticed that they differ slightly from the originals. There seems to be less of a 'V' recess on the top of the saddle at the breaking point where the string leaves the saddle. The new ones have a little line recessed into the all the way over the top, which continues to the bottom of the saddle. I may be imagining it, but the guitar sounds brighter with the new ones, which for me, is not a preference! I like it warmer sounding. I am comparing directly as I used the same set of strings during the swap over, so it's not like the brightness can be attributed to a new set of strings versus a used set.
I was wondering, if, and when did MM introduce these new style saddles, and if they are made from the same material as the ones that came on the guitar when new? Any ideas anyone?

Did you purchased the saddles for hardtail of for trem? There is a difference between the 2. The hardtail haven't got the v shape you mention.

As for sound difference I think it's normal cause the saddles are new and not rusted like the previous one.

Thanks threeminutesboy! I fear I have a hardtail set then! I wasn't aware that there was a difference. Every day's a school day! That clears that up!

Hi William,

Just waiting for MM to come back to us about this.
Strange thing is that all of the Lukes in stock here at S&T seem to be fitted the non v variety?

Thanks Ming! I am convinced that the older V style saddle sounds better. There is even little tell tale signs on each older V saddle where you can see that steel has been bent, which is very reassuring. The newer style doesn't have this, which at best tells me that they are not made from the same material. I can definitely hear a difference. The newer style is brighter with more treble. I much prefer the older ones! Thanks again for all your help Ming! Top class service!
