Actually, I own quite a few guitars from both manufactures and I love them both. I'm not sure where the "diss" is that you extrapolated from my jest. We just have different senses of humor and different sensitivity levels. It's not like I went to the guys house or the Ibanez factory in Japan and took a dump on their lawn while protesting topless with words of hatred spray painted on my chest while I waved my burning underpants around on a crooked stick.

We're all pretty civil here and I extend a virtual handshake to my fellow guitar player.

Back on the topic: I am genuinely in love with the blacked out 7 stringer. I would definitely consider this over the Mystic Dream. Perhaps the 6 string in Mystic and the 7 in black. Good compromise!
 
Boys and girls, the internet can't see you smile or hear you chuckle as you type. This forum is full of people from all over the world, spanning six continents, with varying degrees of proficiency in English, many regional variations, different cultures and different senses of humour. Frequently they don't come across well in plain text and both those of us reading and those of us writing need to keep that in mind. And EBMM (or Ibanez) does not need us to defend their honour. So don't.

Negative opinions are fine and don't need to be countered by everyone, or even anyone.
If something seems overtly negative or trolling, contact myself or beej.

And let's never lose out on some good loving because we are doing this...

My apologies to anyone that took offense to my foolheardy attempt at a joke. I certainly meant no harm by it, for certain. DrKev, I agree with your sentiment completely and I'll be more mindful about such things in the future on here!
 
Also would like to know what's the differences between the JP13 Mahogany and the Majesty Honduran Mahogany. Is it lighter? And how about tonal features?
I'm just curious to know why have Petrucci chosen ebony, is it just because looks better? I saw a bunch of interviews where he says he prefers rosewood.

I've never played anything other than Ebony.

Ebony is regarded as having a great balanced sound between rosewood and some of the brighter woods. Historically it's also been regarded as 'classier' as well. Also, many prefer the look.

I love my ebony fretboard on my JP12-7. I think it feels great and I haven't noticed the accumulation of dirt as I did on every one of my rosewood fretboards. I probably would only continue to play ebony from this point, as much as I dig the JP13.
 
IMO, and I know a lot of people seem to desagree with that, I think the sound of the fretboard doesnt affect the tone that much in the context of an album or a live gig, so I'd go for the look. Keep in mind that when you record the guitars are EQ'ed, compressed, plus the mic and the amp and all the other instruments in the mix, mastering, mp3 format, etc... the sound of the fretboard play so a small part. Guitar alone, yeah there might be a difference, but with the context it doesnt matter than much IMO.
 
I got a chance to play a JP6 and a JP12-6 at GC today- I much much much preferred the FEEL of the ebony- which I think is more the differentiating factor.

The feel difference is larger than the end-tone difference.

But it's still there in the tone... I preferred the ebony there as well xD
 
Love the ebony fretboard on my JP12 also. Its more dense than rosewood which i find makes it easier to play fast (has faster attack also) and do large bends. Combined with SS frets and the neck is just stupid awesome.

guitar myths involve as a must a 3000 $ + and every minor change in wood affecting drastically the tone =))
there is guy here and on 7string forum (Santuzo) who did a blind test with a SBMM JP 70 :
1. stock picups
2. CL/LF
3. Tone zone/ Air norton
you would be shocked of what people evaluations where =)))
some liked the stock better before knowing that they are the "crappy stock pups" :))

I'm still very curious about the sonic thumbprint matching thing. Is that anything related to the pickups?
