oldtimers hockey trivia

so, Im not the only one here at Ye Olde Folkes Inn who remembers the days of "Rocket Richard" ... ther's a guy in here from Flin Flon Manitoba who was raised French Canadian on a farm ... anybody here besides me ever heard of the Flin Flon Bombers ??? no, they weren't NHL, but many of their players went up ... anybody else ever heard of Gordie Howe and the Detroit Redwings???

meanwhile, the q of the day that I stumped my buddy with was about "Toe" Blake ... Q = who was he for which team and what was his real first name ...
I'm not sure if it's on Google or not ... I just remember from the good ol' days of the "Original 6" ... further meanwhile, anybody else here ever heard of Andy Bathgate or Bobby Hull or Johnnhy Bower or Frank Mahovlich???:D
c'mon, hockey fans ...

believe it or not, I even played against Bobby Orr in the Muskoka- Parry Sound district playoffs back about 40 years ago, and he went on to become a superstar, winning the Stanley cup whilst I was destined to become a MusicManpiezo lover
would I lie about matters of such importance.

My Senators have both Dany Heatley and Alfie injured. Not looking good...

I heard that Hossa does not want to sign with Atlanta next year. His contract will be up at season end and he's an unrestricted free agent. Maybe he's trying to force a trade before the deadline. I'm sure he'll be much harder to pick up these days with the salary cap.

I've heard different things about Hossa. I really hope he stays though. I'm just glad we have Recchi now. :) The combo of Kovalchuk, Hossa, and Recchi is destructive.

There's really only 2 players I can't stand:

Sidney Crosby
Sean Avery

you can't stand Sid The Kid???? He's the greatest thing to happen to the NHL in years. 20 years old and already the best player in the league, seems to be a stand up guy(unlike Avery) Stanky..so please explain....why the hate for the Kid?

its quite tragic actually.. if you've ever seen that episode of south park where stan coaches the youth league hockey team... well they based that story off of what happened to stanky.. and actually it could of been him instead of sid the kid haha :D

He's great. I'm not a Penguins fan, but you cannot deny Crosby's talent. He's an all around classy guy too.

good student stanky

So are we talking about Hector Blake that played for the Montreal Maroons and the Montreal Canadiens from the mid 30s to the late 40s? :)
Hey Andrew ... yoou did your homework!:) That's "Toe" Blake aka " The Lamplighter" ... but I remember him on the original "Hockey Night In Canada" the one where Murray Westgate was the friendly Esso gas pump meister who always finshed the ad spots with his salute and "Happy Motoring" way back in the days of 40 cents a gallon (imperial)gas and wimmen looked good in tight fitting sweaters at Hockey games:)Toe Blake stood behind the Montreal Canadien bench wearing a trademark fedora hat, coaching guys like "Rocket" Richard and "Boom Boom" Geffrion and Jean Belleveau to multiple Stanley Cups in the "Forum" in Montreal those guys are the real fabric of NHL history:)
Bonus points for you andrew!!!:)and check google for a pciture of my fave goaltender from Detroit "Terry Sawchuk he got pretty carved up stopping slapshots with his face bedfore Jacques PLante popularized the goalie mask ... you haven't really lived until you've seen a goalie carried off the ice on a stretcher after eating a frozen100 mile per hour puck:D

He's WAY too cocky. Every time I've seen him, he's just shown A LOT of arrogance.

I'm not going to deny his talent. He's a great player. Wrong attitude though.
