I tried a few mOre basses today , I'm more resolved than ever to grab a reflex hh5, I'm hoping the next buyer is here or on talkbass to hopefully sell it later .

Also... My bongo hh5 will never be sold . It just plays so damn well

My 25th plays and sounds very nice. I can only imagine how it would sound with a roasted neck but the standard set-up works very well. So much so that my bandmates like it better than my bongos. But what do they know? ;)

I got a chance to play a Stingray HH today and I have to say pictures do not do justice to how absolutely beautiful these basses are, and on top of that the unfinished roast maple neck plays like a dream. All I can say is GAS.

Rick,

What smell made you send such a beautiful bass back?

My guess is it was probably a petroleum based chemical in the process of making the plastic in the pickup. I say that because when I drove over some freshly paved roads there was a similarity to the smell. I'm not gigging so I'm sitting when I'm playing. It was pungent enough in that setting to make it unplayable for me, if you had it on a strap whether rehearsing or gigging I think it would have been undetectable. I left it out on my guitar bench the Friday night I got it hoping it would evaporate overnight but it didn't. It was in the case for the weekend with me taking a test smell once in a while and it was always there so after waiting patiently for five months for my dream bass I freaked out and sent it right back to TPB. I know I could have easily have had it resolved but I wasn't in that frame of mind after a long build wait and the disappointment so I'm getting a PDN Bongo thats already shipped Tuesday or Wednesday that has passed a smell test, lol. I've had a lot and been around scores of guitars and basses most of my life (64 ) and I never came across or heard of a pickup that smelled, it was pretty weird and yes it was freaking beautiful, so thats the story. I'm sure I'll feel a lot better after getting the Bongo. Rick

I don't believe in that "smell" thing?

Keko, I assure you I don't lie, I didn't concoct a story just to return a bass, since this my 13th instrument from TPB I have a pretty solid relationship with the store, so there is no need to come with a story to return it. My hypothesis on the chemical was just conjecture on my part trying to describe the smell. And since you're calling bullsh*t on my explanation, I'll also describe another aspect of the smell which I was trying to politely not bring up and that was that it smelled like cat spray, so maybe there was some dinosaur p*ss in the oil they used in the plastic.
Oh and also the store verified my complaint of a smelly pickup upon it's return. Yes I agree it's a confusing phenomena and as I stated it was the first time I've ever encountered this. But I don't make up stories so you don't need to roll your eyes in disbelief, the pickup had a really funky smell. Rick

That's really strange. I've experienced the chemical/glue smell in new cases but never from an instrument or pickup. But, as you said, TPB confirmed it.

Ricks legit, perfectbass confirmed the stank.

I'd have a hard time throwing down $2500 for a "stinker" too

Rick and I will grab a reflex hh5 on the next release ! We will both be fine rocking bongos till then.

OK Rick, no hard feelings, ...I hope TPB fixed that problem with EB CS and bass will be for sale soon, or I missed something?

What a bizarre thread this has turned into.

It is pretty bizarre, but an easy fix and it will be as new.

Ok, alls cool Keko

Keko,
The bass is already resold from what I've been reading.
They did have money sent but I don't know how they are dealing with the stinky pup. They did fine by me and I'm happy getting a PDN Bongo.

Now I want a PDN Big Al 4 for some reason and/or Sterling 5..... why does this happen to me??

Also what do guys you think? (And no I can't afford all 3!:D)

I have a feeling the pdn s are going to hold their value really well

You can always get the "regular " stuff later
