Hey all!
I have been a (mostly) lurker here for a few years. I have been meaning to share my experience with EBMM guitars, and since today is the third anniversary of me getting my first Music Man guitar, I thought, what better way to celebrate?
I've been playing guitar for 20 years. Since I started, playing always felt strange, as if I could never get comfortable with the guitar, no matter what brand / model I picked up.
When I decided to move to LA and try to make a living as a musician, I went through many, many different guitars in a few years, from the usual brands to high profile boutique makers to some obscure stuff. Still, it never felt quite right. After so many years trying to find the right instrument, I became really frustrated, and started to think that maybe playing guitar wasn't for me, maybe my hands / fingers were not right for the instrument. So I decided to quit playing guitar and focus on sound engineering.
One good day, after moving to Mass, I was browsing ebay and saw an EBMM Silhouette with FR bridge for auction. It reminded me of a blue Silo I used to lust after as a kid, the one on "The Ultimate guitar Book" by Tony Bacon. So I just placed a bid on it, just for nostalgia sake, and forgot about it. I somehow won the auction, and a few days later I received the guitar. After taking it out of the case and strumming a couple of chords, my jaw dropped. THIS WAS IT! It fit my hands like a glove. I couldn't believe it. And I couldn't put it down!
For the next couple of weeks after that, I started playing non-stop. I felt like a 15 year old again, just practicing and enjoying every minute of it. I even started to record my own music again. The firt track I recorded, just about a month after getting my Silo, I called "The Comeback". (You can listen to it here)
Fast forward to today, I am back to making my living as a guitar player. During the day I make music for music libraries, commercials, radio and tv, or do internet sessions from home. On the weekends, I play in a great, fun band which is booked solid every friday and saturday through next year. Onstage, I only play my #1 Silo with a Floyd, all night every night. If I break a string, I reach for another Silo with a Floyd.
I believe if it wasn't for getting my hands on an EBMM, my life now would be quite different. I have never enjoyed playing guitar as much as I do now. So thanks BP and everybody at Ernie Ball for making the instruments that changed my life!
Best,
David
