I bought one Bongo, still have it, and have a DD Bongo on order. I'm convinced.

I traded my Bongo, and then traded for it back less than a month later!
What a killer bass. Actually, the one year anniversary for my Bongo is coming up in the next week or so. I can't imagine life without it now.
Glad your happy about getting your bass back Tom! I too am very happy with the Canadian Ray but after a few days with your Bongo I definitely see a Bongo 4HH in my future.......

I go through alot of basses, but am hooked on the Bongo, and have no plans on selling it. I would like to get a 5H or 4H also if I can find one for a good price.

Since my original Black Sapphire arrived, I've had two Bongos that are no longer here.
The first was a fretted SHp Bongo 5 in white that hung around while the same bass was built fretless like it was originally ordered. I never really took to it since I knew it was going away.
The second was a SH Bongo 5 in Carbon Blue that I got for a song from GC that I sold to Paul when I realized I really couldn't justify a new bass, even for a song.
In hind sight, I wish I had hung on to the Carbon Blue SH. I remember it being very light and resonant.
I got the single H Bongo 4 from Ray with the intention of flipping it when my Dargie Delight arrives. But, now I think I'm going to have a single H 4 with flats and a single H 5 with roundwounds, instead. Everybody wins!

When I bought my Bongo HH 4 two years ago, I wanted a Music Man bass with two pickups and the Bongo was my only option. I had a Sterling fretless and a SR5, and wanted to add another tonal dimension.
Had the two pickup Ray's and Sterling's been out at the time, I probably would have bought one of them over the Bongo just because of familiarity. I thought seriously about trading the Bongo this year for a HH Ray or Sterling HH, but every time I record the Bongo it seems to play so well and sit in the mix perfectly. My other MM's play and record beautifully as well, but they are very different tonally. My only gripe about the Bongo is I find the position of the neck pickup messes with my slappin finger. I had to lower the pickup as far as it would go to avoid this. No biggie.
So to answer BP's question: I came close but no cigar. It's funny that you phrased your question the way you did because my friend said "If you trade that Bongo, I think you're really going to miss it". It was that comment that confirmed in my mind that I would keep it.

I do have a story which I think will illustrate two concepts.
1. Bongo single humbuckers are good.
2. I am an asshat.
Wait, there's a third concept:
3: All the Bongo single humbuckers rock.
A long time ago, back when BP was really the only person flogging the single H Bongos, I thought, "Well, but my Bongo has TWO pickups, you see, and that one only has one, and more is better! It's the American way!"
But then Travis bought a single H fiver which looked a lot like this:
And, for whatever reasons, I think he was going to prison or something, he wanted to sell it and it was Desert Gold so I bought it.
And I took sexy photos of it and played it live once and thought, "Okay, well, this is better than I thought it would be" but I was so addicted to my HH fiver that I wasn't thinking straight and so then I sold it to Ken (heavyduty), a much smarter person than either yours truly or Travis, because he has vowed to never part with it.
Good for him, I say!
Then Ben had a single H in Rolls Burgundy, which looked like this:
And Ben is an Aggie, and he dropped a screwdriver on it, too, and I don't know what he was thinking but anyway he was selling it and I said, "Shut up, just bring it to me, will you?" And he did.
I think the color was just not me, as I am a bit more flamboyant, so when Tkarter expressed some interest in a single H fiver, I said, "Tom, this thing is yours" and he said "Okay" and he has vowed to never part with it.
Good for him, I say! Plus I think BP put an autograph on it for him earlier this month.
Anyway, once I was single H-less, I said, "Dang!" I say "Dang" a lot, although mostly on the internet to prove I am a redneck.
So the wise and powerful Dargin said, "Look, we build these things, I bet we can get you another one" and he was right. I couldn't see being without a single H Bongo 5. And so he asked me what color I thought I might like and I realized I didn't really have a red one, so I asked for one like this:
Which I think arrived in maybe late April or early May of this year and has become my go-to instrument of all time. (It is currently being challenged by my 30th Ray, but that's another thread.)
So the moral of the story is - wait, I don't know! Maybe it's - pick a color and go with it, because all these damned Bongo 5 single hummers will kick your ass.
And now I'm REALLY stuck with Candy Red because have you seen the back of this bass now?

That was a wonderful story Jack!
It had everything, it had the word "dang"... a lot! And it had sexy pictures of Bongos and history, not that boring kind of history either.
There were people I know mentioned thru out the whole thing, yes that was a great story!
You should write more stories, with even more Bongo pictures!
