Mr.Mow - I've seen you on the Ozbass forum so am going to guess you are in Australia. Allans Music stocks them. You could also try Bass Centre or Bass People.

Allans looked at me blankly.. 'umm.. dunlop makes some cleaners'.. 'no, ernie ball'.. ummmmm.. :D

Funny since they have them listed on their website!

Although, I shouldn't be surprised

Have you seen the condition of the their stingrays? They have 3 in stock in their city store, have had them for about 2-3 years, the necks are nearly black with filth.. still they wont discount them!

I refuse to support their chain.. hopeless!

OK guys, I forgot to this Thread, now I'm ready to share my "secret" of gentle cleaning unfinished maple fret board and neck from behind too!

Use regular transparent window glass pump-spray cleaner, apply it by spraying to the rough clean white (uncolored) towel, than rub firmly dirty parts of the fret board!
All dirt will pass over to the towel!

Repeat several times, with clean part of the towel and for the last time rub the whole unfinished neck!

Leave a few hours to dry off!

When unfinished maple dry off, rub it firmly and juicy with EB Wonder Wipes, live it to dry off!

At the end, polish with soft uncolored (white) cotton cloth!

Warning: maple will never be "white" like when new, but it will shine in the whole new refreshed look! ;)

P.S. ...if You are afraid to do this, well don't, but I made a great results with this method!

When I got my SR4 (used), the back of the neck was filthy and the fretboard wasn't much better...I used Murphy's Oil Soap on it, straight from the bottle (not diluted) and it cleaned up really nice...I wiped it as dry as I could and then let it dry completely for a few hours and then used gunstock wax on it...

Once it's clean, the best thing is to make sure that your hands are relatively clean before playing again...going straight from eating chicken wings to playing your bass with an unfinished maple neck isn't really advisable.

Two follow-up questions...

1. I was always told to not remove all the strings at once when changing strings (because the neck can warp, or say they say), but it seems necessary if I want to really clean the fretboard. Is it OK to remove all the strings on my Ray 5hh for cleaning?

2. What do you use for cleaning the body of the bass? I usually just wipe it down with the EB rag that came with the bass, but occasionally it needs more cleaning. Are the wonder wipes good for this, too?

I've never worried about taking all the strings off for cleaning or maintenance. If something happens to the neck as a result of that then something was going to go wrong anyway. And yes the wonder wipes are great for getting sweat and stuff off the body.

Yes, you can take off all the strings! Whoever told you that should cut back on meds!

Rubbing alcohol will work in a pinch.

# 2, I believe the WW fretboard conditioner is to be used on NON-finished necks and fretboards. They do make WW for cleaning finished bodies and such.

My SR is 5 years old, and mine is since May 2010..a bought used one, with already dirty FB,and it is not my fault..my hands are very clean and i know how to deal with instrument(i play bass for 17 years)..but as you can see, ww is something that cannot help with this very common issue with dirty necks..i think there is no solution for cleaning that...
sorry for my bad english.

Hi there groove,

we already talked about that before over the PMs and I'm really sorry that my recommendation didn't help! (I wrote above for everyone)

I did very good results with my technique, but I'm the first owner of my Music Man and fret board is probably not dirty as Yours!

However, after cleaning and WW treatment, maple wood will never be white like new one, more yellower..., darker..., or so...

I do that every time when restrung my bass, that means aprox. every 6 months. I think it's no need to touch anything in between, just wipe neck with soft cotton cloth after playing!

I know it will sounds cruel but maybe for You is to consider new Classic series Stigray 5 with high gloss finished maple neck? ;)
