HS NT: a whole lot different than what I'm used to

Thanks for that additional info. Part of me wants to run a pink noise analysis on the preamp to see exactly what's going on with that bass control, as well as the other 2. That effort would be invalid, however, because the source impedance (low Z buffered output) wouldn't be even close to reality (complex impedance, with a large inductive component, that varies depending on selector switch setting). One thing I suspect is that "flat" might not be precisely that on 1 or more controls. I could also pull the preamp and generate a schematic for it. But it would be a zero-return effort, because I like the sound of things as they are, except for one minor characteristic which I can easily work around externally at zero additional cost, just as I'm already doing with every other bass guitar I own, and so I wouldn't be after changing anything on the SR board. Finally, from the drawings and sims I've seen of the 2-band, I could infer things about the 3-band, especially regarding how exactly (and where) any high-pass filtering is done, but I learned long ago that's dangerous. I'd rather just play the thing and continue to be impressed with just how good it feels and sounds.

Ok, this is a first. I got called in to play with a team I haven't played with in a long time. Sound crew this time around: rank beginners hanging on for dear life. As I stand in front of the mains, my bass sounds like mud but it shouldn't (all coils in, all tone controls flat, amp flat -- and yes, true flat, not "G-K flat" or any other nonsense like that, because the tone circuit is my spec and my parts and my soldering). It sounded great that way last week through a system that pinks out reasonably flat. I ask them if they've got me going only through the subs or through the tops as well, 'cause it sure sounds like the former. I offer to fix, I get the ten thousand mile stare. Oh boy...

Then it occurs to me: I can fix this from right where I am! I flip to the bridge pickup alone (both coils), and dime the mid control. Instant definition, and I've still got all my bottom end.
