I choose not to play that game because of how addictive it is.

It is one of the main reasons I do NOT own an X-Box 360. I would seriously drop out of college and quit guitar and live in my mother's garage for the rest of my life and be sucked into a world of games.. sort of like those World of Warcraft people.

Quite a strong season on Rockband. Someone once told me that this game will take it to a whole new level. :D

I expect a whole new herd of bassists and drummers appearing soon.

Well I'm a convert....I used to be one of the purists that BP loves. I have since changed my tune because of conversations here and now a few relatives who are suddenly interested in my real guitars. My brother is a bassist and key player, and he bought both Rock Band and GH3 for hsi family, and they love it. Me? I already embarrass myself with real guitars, I'm not about to pick up GH3 and end up looking even more foolish because I can't play it...(visions of Randy on the South Park 'Guitar Queer-O episode)

I have to say I prefer using games to do things I can't do in real life...killing monsters, driving racecars, that sort of thing. But if it makes people want to pick up a real instrument it's a good thing and I can certainly see the fun in it.

Can we say "saturation"?

Gone are the days when playing guitar gets more than an apathetic nod from the chicks. It's more like "oh, you play guitar too"? Now I ask, what good is playing guitar in the first place if you can't get chicks by playing? Now it's been reduced to "Hey baby, wanna see me kick ass on this new geek version of Guitar Hero?"

Chit, it's no wonder more women have taken up following pro sports, where at least real men ain't just diddlin' their joy stick.

Furthering that line of thinking... GH is very much like reading music. When I first played the game, I felt that anyone who does really well at it, should have no problems learning to play an instrument well.

Of course, I'd hope that the instant gratification factor of the game leads people to play guitar as you're pointing out, and the one drawback to the game is that so many people just play it and never transfer into something more meaningful, but really, that's all in the sort of argument that any leisurely activity can fall into if people do it too much.

I don't see where GH is any worse than any other game that a lot of guitar players play while they vehemently bash GH.

LOL.

Everyone's an expert these days, too.

I'll be on the Subway, and I'm always asked.. "What'cha got in there?" *stranger points to gigbag or case.*

My responses are usually:

"Oh, it's my Music Man JP6."
"Oh, it's my Jem."
"Oh, it's my RG."

...

After a deer in the headlights moment..

They reply,

"Do you like Strats? I love Strats. Fender makes the best damn guitar in the world. I just love Jimi Hendrix(John Mayer, Eric Clapton, and very rarely SRV), best damn guitar players that ever lived. Can you play any Hendrix?"

My brother has GH and he is going to pick up Rock Band today.

Myself, I have too many games for my 360. I'd rather invest the time playing my JP and learning new stuff on that.

LMAO!

I sent a pickguard into MM CS for an authenticity checkup a couple months ago. When the clerk at the UPS store saw where it was going, and asked what it was, he said, "Yeah, I got one of those" a Silo Special. He wasn't bs-ing. Here in little ole Kingman, someone besides me owns a Ball. The guitar world really does continue to get smaller as more and more people play guitar.

A friend of mine introduced me to her boss: a dentist with an obscene guitar collection, which he never plays. It's what successful yuppies do these days: collect stuff.

As an aside, my youngest son is coming out in a couple weeks, leaving his Fender, Gib and G&L behind. Naturally we plan on jamming a lot, and all there'll be are two Silo Specials. Curios how he'll take to them. I'll have to ask if he plays GH. He's never mentioned it.

As far as creating a new market, 'course it (GH etc) does. Nothing morally wrong with that. Some guys carry a laptop, some a guitar, and some both. It's common...

I guess if there is one actual thorn that sticks my craw in all this, it's the whole idea of competitive guitar playing. Nothing "elitist" about that point of few, unless you consider guitar playing a competitive sport, rather than a means of creative expression. There's still room for a little purism in the mix.

What makes me laugh is thinking of Tyler, one of the most kick-ass guitar players I know, saying, "I suck at that game."
