I think some here are missing the point...

Guitar Hero sounds like a great way to expose uninitiated audiences to guitar-driven rock. Once that seed is planted, who knows what will grow? In junior high, I started out with AC/DC and Black Sabbath (and still love them) and they inspired me to pick up the guitar. From that starting point, I've learned to love and appreciate all sorts of music.

The elitist guitar snob attitudes really don't go very far towards attracting new blood to the art we all share and love.

Kid's nowdays are so into this rap crap that they have no interest in rock music or guitar playing. This game introduces alot of younger kids to a genre of music that they would've never viewed as 'cool'. A much larger learning curve with the real thing, but once they hit a power chord they'll be like

I tell ya, on that system and cranking along to Priestess, nothing cooler!

I'm all for people being more exposed to the guitar, but...

I just think that the youth of today are spending too much time in front of the TV and the computer, and should spend more time learning how to actually do other things: reading, writing, cooking, gardening, fishing, learning a real musical instrument, skateboarding, surfing, or pretty much anything other than sitting on their asses all day.

I got to play rock band the other night... I now hate Iron Maiden and Coheed...

The only thing I don't like about the games are the complexes that it gives people... "Oh, you play guitar, you'll be good at this..." "Yeah, you can play that song, but can you do it on expert in GH?" I like the indirect approach to getting people to develop rhythms and the basic co-ordination to play an instrument. Next step, Band and Orchestra Hero.

I hear ya Silver, and yes it was late after a long day and I guess I could have worded my response more nicely Sluke

but! the thing that I noticed with the game is that you really do work on some hand/eye coordination but also, it's a GREAT introduction to reading music in my opinion. One thing that i see with my bass students is that they have a hard time when first learning to read in trying to watch the sheet and their fingerboard.... w/ GH you're watching the screen and "reading" the notes and note necessarily the 'guitar' BUT your left hand is doing a fretting action and your right hand is doing a plucking/strumming action.... the player is reading/watching the screen whilst playing the guitar and not having to look at the guitar, in my mind, a great introduction to playing any instrument for any person.

Another amazing thing about the game, is that those aren't the original tracks. There's an actual group of guys that record the songs and attempt to make them sound like the original! Damn, do they do a great job!

GH and Rock Band are the closest thing to getting the eurphoria of everything clicking that we all get when everything goes right live.

But back to it. I guess the detractors would rather have it be tractor hero...It is growing guitarists and we need all the help we can get as the guitar boom has subsided.

Couldn't agree more BP. My kids are loving it. Had to laugh today when I walked in singing the lyrics to Black Magic Woman as they were playing. They all stared at me asking how I know it ! "I like to keep up to date with my musical tastes" I told them. Then later I caught them boogying on down in the kitchen to my new Albert Lee album. So all's good with me !

It's called satire. I, frankly, view it as just another game. Cool that it sells guitars, just like it's cool that televised bass tournaments sell boats; but it's no substitute for a day out on the water.

About the competative thing, yes, of course a pro and wannabe pro player must have every competetive edge they can manage, but they hopefully don't sell out their soul for the almighty buck. If it's only about winning, where's the music coming from? Like I said, there's still room for a little purism.

Probably, but if my girls spent as much time practicing as they would like (w/o parental supervision) to spend in front of their (name the platform...DS, PS2, WII, XBOX) they would make shredders like Tyler (and BP) practice even harder! What parent wouldn't be somewhat comforted about an electronic babysitter, if it was actually improving their kids' brain power rather than just wasting time. Just look at the popularity of leap frog and brain age...trust me, there is a HUGE market out their for baby-boomer-Luke-wannabes living vicarously through their kids.
