1st - i hope everyone is doing well. It's been a while since i've been to the forum.
2nd - I play an sr5. I usually use D'adario or Ernie Ball strings (.45-.130) This past weekend, i was recording and for whatever reason, i used a DR set. Now DR's set is .45-.125 instead of the .130. I noticed that on my G string (the .45) starting on about the eleventh fret that the higher i went up the neck, the note was dramatically sharper. I tune to 440 and have a pretty low action set. Has anyone experienced this before? I could have posted this thread in the strings section, but there are more bass players in here.

thanks,
jb

Any time you change string brands/gauges, you will need to set your intonation by adjusting the bridge saddles.

using anything but our strings will cause hair loss, irritable bowel syndrome, and erectile dysfuntion.

Seriously you need to get a good set up or change back to our strings!

I always cringe a little when I see posts, on this forum, where people mention that they use strings made by manufacturers other than Ernie Ball.

I understand that we all have free choice, but it's a bit like going into a shop carrying a plastic bag with the logo on and containing goods bought in a rival shop. It would not feel quite right somehow, although not actually wrong.

Well... that was "pushing it over the edge a bit" dear Sir

I wasn't trying to "push it" or do anything wrong. I mentioned that i normally use eb or d'ad strings. Now i know that D'ad strings are a competitive brand as well as DR. However, the reason i play these brands is a matter of convenience (music store inventory). There was no ill will whatsoever and I didn't mean to offend anyone. As a matter of fact, I was so happy this past friday that ernie ball sent me a happy birthday e-mail, I went a purchased another ray on saturday. I had my eyes on another particular fretless on saturday and instead spent the money i had saved for the fretless on another eb

thanks

Too bad using them won't cure these ailments.

Like BP said, monkeeeboy and BP said, need to go thru a setup and work the intonation.

Of course jb. Just trying to say that the guy had an intonation problem with his EB bass and what's a better place to share this than on our forum? We all used various types of strings on our basses. I personally prefer EB strings on all my basses (even the non EB basses... hush hushhhhh).
Enjoy your new EB man! All's good.

No offence intended, and my post wasn't aimed at you specifically, you are not the only "offender". ;)

I really do cringe though.

I think that the message on these forums has been well and truly established. If you use anything in the guitar/bass world that didn't come out of the EBMM factory then don sackcloth and ashes and for goodness sake don't mention the offensive product.;)

Brewer, I hear you loud and clear. For some reason the brand you tried, along with all the brands I have tried except EB and D'addario have needed more compensation if the same gauge was used.
The Slinkys intonate like thinner strings, ie need less compensation. Why this is I do not know, but I'll guess it has something to do with core/wrap ratio (see, fancy string talk;-))

Thank you Brewer......What does it ay if other string "makers" strings require extensive intonation.....?.....??????

The intersting thing, to me at least, is if the relatively little compenstion slinkys need was a design point or something that just happened because that core/wrap had the best feel?
If that is why that is? or something... And then it all went blank...

I'll go home and set the green bass up:p

Jeff dont seat it I thought it was funny and gave me a chance to use those disclaimers from all of the hair growing and prostate commercials!

Easy BP! It is all those prostate meds that keep me able to send my checks to you! :D

I agree I do find them humorous when I see them on TV. All of that to keep the lawyers happy and scare the hell out of the public while they are at it.
