A couple of questions about the Wal bass you ordered:
1) What model did you go with? Geddy Lee model?
1) What is it about the Wal do you like so much? I noticed when Geddy played them in the 80's they sounded very trebbly. Do they all sound this way? Just curious.

the trebbly sound that geddy got was his tone, thats what he used, it was also his style. I can make my pre-eb stingray sound trebble (if I try hard.).

IMHO for a better example of Wal tone, take a listen to an album called "Fantastic Planet" by a great, no defunct, band named Failure. Either that of Aenima by Tool. Wal,s are actually notorious for having sometimes too much bottom end.
also on walbasses.com, there are sound samples of wals, admittedly most of the songs are very far from my musical style, but it gives a good impression.

Overall, i think it will complement my stingrays nicely. being a dual humbucker and a very intricate preamp (lots of pushpull, etc). plus a totally different body wood, it will get me all the tones i could want. I will have it all! haha! plus i think it will sound way good in church.

a few thoughts

Liking girls should be a pretty natural thing if you are not gay-- not if there is anything wrong with that (see seinfeld). Many tortured artists like yourself were also confused about their sexuality.

But I will tell you that society does not have a conspiracy set up to get you to procreate. In fact, given the explosion of gayness on tv (again, not that there is anything wrong with it. Will and Grace is a very funny show. And I'd love to have the Fab 5 come and fix up my crap ass living room) one would even think society was trying to get you to like guys-- not girls.

And for those of you who think that mental illness and depression is a choice someone makes, I can take you to meet some of the fellows that I've met when working as a physician in an emergency room in a Veterans Affairs Hospital. These are truly diseased people with chemicals imbalances and wires crossed in their brain. They have big wide open eyes and are crazy as S$*T house rats.

I can guarantee you that they could not out think their depression or crazyness-- it is as chemical a disease as cancer or heart attacks.

Attention Deficit Disorder on the other hand, is not a real thing, I think. THOSE kids just need a good beating.

i know theres a genetic disposition towards being a bassist (see my post/study regarding bassists being fat).


but is there a chemical reaction in the brain that causes us to be attracted to the bass guitar.

I agree. However, I'm not refering to true physical/chemical problems - I'm talking about old fashion "I'm going to cop out because of this or that..." type of depression, anger, etc. It's a proven scientific fact that there are a great many people in this world that DO NOT have chemical imbalances, but are just copping out for one reason or another. THAT is what I was referring to.

In my youth I did a lot of volunteer work at a local mental institution, etc. - and the ones who had real problems were very evident. However, the ones who were just emoitionally lazy were also very evident.

Not that I promote needless (Notice I said "Needless") violence - but I really believe some of these kids need an old fashion ass whippin'! Discipline is an artform - it's not brutality.

I agree with you 100 percent that most people with borderline mental problems are looking for an excuse as to why they can't just suck it up and work and make a contribution to society-- so they get a "diagnosis" of depression from someone that they can carry around and say "see-- I'm depressed. I have a medical problem".

and every generation seems to have it worse.

Even the medical students who are coming out of med school these days have a sense of entitlement.

The problem is that whereas in the old days when kids (that includes 23 year old medical students) would complain they'd get the smack down, or get fired, or would be cast aside becuase someone was hungrier who wanted the work.

Now when people complain, the administration (anywhere, everywhere) says "What can we do to change, so we can help this person!".

And I'm sorry to digress so many miles away from ernie ball bassdom. But I of course did not start it. But this thread was way too entertaining for me to stay out of it!

Lets change the subject. I still need a good strap for my bass. The strap I have for my guitar is a little thick on the ends. Any thoughts on a good strap?

Thanks for the tips on the straps.

But it was more fun to talk about mental illness and the benefits of a good ass whooping on a child's behavior. (SLLLLIIIICE as the old wound is opened- or thread)

And good on you for smacking some sense into your kid cgworkman! A little fear never hurt. I can't stand to see these kids out where there parents are saying for the 100th time "I really mean it Spaulding! Put that down! I really mean it!" and the kid is looking at them like, "Dude, if you meant it you would have done something about it a long time ago!". Hollow threats.

My father used (only twice-- but I remember them well) what we called "The Ring Thwop" on me. It really was just a smack upside the head when I did something really stupid (he used the hand with the ring on it). The ring had the added effect of really thwoping you. It really friggin' hurt-- but only for a few minutes. But I didn't screw around with him-- you know?

I listened to what he said becuase I knew that physical pain would be the result of my disobeying him. Anything else doesn't matter to a kid.

No dinner? Ok.

No nintentdo? Ok.

A smack upside the head?-- Welllllllllllll, now we're talking! I'll put this down right here! Hows that?

I don't care how distractable and unfocused a kid is. He will listen if he knows that if he screws around there might be PAIN involved.

But you should never do it when you are angry (at least that is what they say).

Like when Homer Simpson wanted to go buy a gun to shoot someone and the guy at the gun store said he'd have to wait a week Homer said, "But I'm angry nowwwww!"
