Ok. I have a bro who is a bassist in a Van Halen tribute band. He, of course, plays bass and is a phenomenal player to boot. He plays in the VH band to have fun and let loose without having to be all serious.

He has a "Jack Daniels" bass that was made for him. However, it is a piece of garbage and is mainly there for looks.....in reference to Mike Anthony and it gets the younger peeps excited....

He was really griping about the bass and I told him about my EBMM Bongo. He never heard of it and I told him I would bring it in and let him give her a whirl at his next band's practice. He said if it is better than his buddy's Ibanez, he would be shocked. I told him the Ibanez couldn't polish the bongos fret board on it's worse day. He was not buying it. I pressed on and told him, if he did not like the bongo, I would pay for the doctor's visit to examine his head......that sealed the deal That was last night.

Today.........dude could not believe what he heard, played, felt, and just would not basically shut the hell up about the bongo. :D . He said it was the best bass he has ever played and the members of his band loved the sound as well. So much so, they asked him to ask me if he could use it at their next gig.....which is tomorrow (Friday). He told me when he hit the first note, the whole band looked at him and said ,"What in the hell is that thing of beauty..." He gave them the story.

So, he asks me, "Can I use it for our next show on Friday?". I told him, well, the bongo ain't very Van Halen now is it.....he kinda sulked a little bit, but said, "Maybe if Mike Anthony hears it, he'll convert and then it will fit the Van Halen scheme.." I lost it and said Yes! Couldn't argue with that reasoning.....hehehehehe....

Another satisfied non-believer! I will let you know how the show goes, as I will be attending to safeguard my bongo, I mean, support my friend's band.....life is good.

Yeah Koogs, it wasn't an easy sell for me either until I played BP's at the Open House.

As soon as I got back home, I sold my cruiser (buying a new one anyway), and bought my first Bongo...been in love since!

OK, then maybe I'll stake the claim for royalties on "Bongolians" then . . . . same terms as Beth! . . . .

My Bongo experience was a little different.

I have a tendency to like basses and guitars that are a little "different" and especially if the majority of my peer group are not going to like them (I'm a contrary bugger, I know)

I bought a Bongo in part because I got it off ebay at a good price and partly because of the above reasons.

I'd not long bought a Stingray (well swapped for one of my Ricky 4003s) because I was curious as to what all the fuss was (I'm also not one who has to try basses first, I'll buy and try and sell on if I don't like) and was very impressed with the sound I got.

The day the Bongo arrived I had been playing the Stingray, and I unplugged and plugged in the Bongo. It just took my breath away, nothing I had matched the sound coming from the beast, I wacked up the bass boost and my pre and power amps both clipped  and I had to turn everything down.

Up until then I'd had a practice of rotating my basses when out gigging as one was vaguely like another and it didn't make a whole lot of difference for the quieter gigs.

Now if I'm gigging with my full rig, or it's a place where I really want people to sit up and take notice I have to take the Bongo, as I can't get the sounds I like most from anything else.

I bought a Pedulla Rapture J2 a while ago and have spent two thirds of what I paid for it on a John East U-Retro Deluxe and a pair of EMGs to get it to make a sound closer to what I hear when the Bongo is plugged in. I don't want it to make exactly the same sound but it was weak (to my ears) by comparison.

Now I have a 5 string Bongo for those moments when I want to break up concrete flooring without putting my back out.

It won't stop me buying other basses as I like to be different (just to confuse people I bought a white '78 Fender P bass a little while ago)

I'll be getting together in a week or so with 40 or so friends and I fully expect to surprise a few who scoff at the Bongo's looks, probably from the first time they hear it in anger (and with a 1500w rig behind it, it's not going to be subtle :D )

I don't suppose that all those that will delighted by the noise will be so thrilled as to change their mind about the looks but you can't please all the people all the time.

I can't wait.

Paul.

There it is again, "to be used in anger" -- Paul, are you from the UK?

I love that expression -- makes me think of someone strumming all hard on their guitar like a cheese grater, face all twisted and contorted with anger. Tee hee!

;) :D ;) :D

Yes, I am from the UK :)

It's intended to imply (as I'm sure you're aware ;) ) it being given full throttle rather than just trundling along on tickover (or being played quietly at home).

Great as it sounds through my little GK MB150E it's so much fun cranking up the rig with a band and rattling a few windows :D :D :D

Paul.

Quick story about my dad.

He was a cop here until he passed away. When Blazing Saddles came out there was an officer at the station that looked a lot like Mongo so everyone started calling him Mongo. That is everyone except my dad. He called him Mr. Lloyd. It took a while before someone caught on.

Mobay...you and I have something very much in common here. Mine served 15 years on the force before having to retire early when he developed Leukemia.

Helluva guy, he was! Had about the same sense of humor, too!

Bongoloid he was a bongoloid
Happier than you and me
Bongoloid he was a bongoloid
And it determined what he could see

Bongoloid he was a bongoloid
One chromosome too many
Bongoloid he was a bongoloid
And it determined what he could see

And he wore a hat
And he had a job
And he brought home the bacon
So that no one knew

Bongoloid he was a bongoloid
His friends were unaware
Bongoloid he was a bongoloid
Nobody even cared

I believe I used the term "Bongolicious" many times on the old Dude Pit Beffie but since ezBoard dumped most of the history over there I can't pull up any posts to prove it so I'll pass on my copyright infringement claim.

That and also because you're a girl and all...you can have it.
