Well, maybe it's just you getting off on real good bass players? Perhaps it should be a requirement that you had to be at a certain technical level to be allowed to record an album?
With Nirvana, it's all about the song.
Green Day may be easy teenage plastic punk rock, but they revived a whole genre.
I'd rather jump around all day listening to Green Day and Nirvana than suffer through a Level 42 album. Not that I don't like mark King, it's just that the music does not give me anything.
The others you mention, sure, they are/were great players and musicians, but that does not mean Nirvana or Green Day are not great bands.
My opinion of course.
