I can respect your opinion on the 80s, but Nirvana and Green day are flat crap! John B. Gayden, Lee Rocker, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, Jaco, etc... That's emotional playing... Nirvana is nothing more than childish rebellion, and Green Day is McDonalds poser punk. My opinion, of course. I do agree there was some cool bass playing in the 70s -- Frank Zappa stuff for example :)

Well, maybe it's just you getting off on real good bass players? Perhaps it should be a requirement that you had to be at a certain technical level to be allowed to record an album?
With Nirvana, it's all about the song.
Green Day may be easy teenage plastic punk rock, but they revived a whole genre.
I'd rather jump around all day listening to Green Day and Nirvana than suffer through a Level 42 album. Not that I don't like mark King, it's just that the music does not give me anything.
The others you mention, sure, they are/were great players and musicians, but that does not mean Nirvana or Green Day are not great bands.
My opinion of course.

I'm glad Madness finally got a mention

Oh yeah! If I had listed from favorite on down they would have been tied with The Police and Duran Duran at the top.

Mark Bedford is still one of my favorite bass players.

I've been playing blues and R&B for about ten years now, and suddenly I've joined an 80's cover band, and I'm loving it. Playing Duran Duran tunes on the Sterling is heaps of fun!

"New Moon On Monday" is pretty much my favorite DD song and bass line, but that is a tough call, as they kicked ass between the first album and Notorious!

Well, I'm playing it all on an SWR, if that makes you feel any better.

Does a 2x10 really give you enough volume for anything other than a coffee house?

I love 80's pop almost more than life itself. Gimme a little Kajagoogoo, The Fixx, Thompson Twins, Culture Club....you name it and I love it. I think that my love for the Stingray tone grew out of the music of the 80's and the funk of the late 70's ala the Bros Johnson and the Dazz Band (I think he played a Sabre). My favorite 80's icon is Sade and Paul Denman's Stingray tone is the yardstick that I measure others buy. I just got this little GK 400RB head from Mr Chuck Moses and together with my 87 Stingray and ye old SWR Goliath Jr....I have MY SOUND. I love this combo. Tight bottom, snappy hi's and a nice dry mid scooped tone that just says SLAP ME!

Well,

We definitely have much in common; especially the Brothers Johnson, Sade (Paul S. Denman) and Dazz Band part. I love both the 70s and 80s!:) I think because of the commercial aspects of the eighties, the decade's music went sort of underappreciated in many ways. For example, Duran Duran. They have great songs, but their fashion and jet-setting image overshadowed the musical artistry. Anyway, I'm sure someone has already written a thought-provoking essay (or thesis) on this many times over, so I'll let it be. I'm always glad to learn that I'm not the only one who wears sunglasses at night...

If there is anything that I have found through various forums is that music is one of those beasts and everyone is going to have a different opinion..... I personally think rubbishing genres or era's is silly.... I try to be very open minded... Crikey I even try to make myself listen to top 40 hiphop/pop...sometimes there is the odd groovy bassline or vocal line... but every genre from every time period has something to off and people that will love it more than others...

You just have to try and understand why people like it... what it is about...

I am just going to wipe this dribble off my chin

I've played bars packed with 150 people and even weddings with just an SWR 2x10. Of course, I give it 650watts with one side of my power amp, so it's plenty loud enough. In my experience, SWR cabinets need to be given lots of power for them to open up and display their true sound.

I played about 7 gazillion gigs with my old Goliath Jr. before replacing it with an Epifani 212. I prefer the sound of a Jr. "pushed" to a bigger cab. On bigger gigs I was going direct into the PA anyway-I never felt a need for more cab than the Jr.

At least now we know why you're called "Dude".

For some-odd reason, and before the Open House, I pictured some "Dude" selling basses from a cottage...on the Santa Monica Pier. :p

I actually started this thing from a one room converted water tower in Glen Ellen, CA on Warm Springs Road.

At first, I thought Glen Helen (US Festival '83), then I realized Sonoma Co.
