I have a AT-1 in the bridge and a 36th Bridge in the neck of my AX-20 which I really, really like. I also have a AT-1 in my Silo special. The AT-1 is THE bridge pickup for me, it is a tiny bit more polite than the custom B1.
And the 36th bridge as a neck humbucker goes well into Air Norton territory but with more clarity and PAF-ness.
A perfect match for an Axis, if you ask me.
I have the original customs in my AL HH, which I play when I need something more aggressive and ballsy. So they will never get out of it, no way. So leave the Customs where they belong :)

My Axis SS has a Bareknuckle Nailbomb (Alnico) which is just incredible. Didn't change the character of the guitar THAT much but added clarity, output and harmonics to the tone. Really great match.

My other Axis SS (Rosewood) has the stock pickup and I agree that it fits the guitar perfectly. I've not really thought of replacing it yet. If I did, probably a Bareknuckle HolyDiver or, if I really really wanted to explode my amplifier, a Crawler which is just about the most open, rich, widest sounding pickup I have ever tried. Just incredible.

I was also curious about this too as I love my rosewood HH but sometimes I wish the guitar had a little more bite. I always liked the authority of Steve Vais sound especially on the high strings. I got to plug my guitar into his rig at Vai Academy and it simply did not have that screaming tone at all compared to Steve's. I know it's not a shred machine but I wonder what the woods will allow.
