I like the feel of the pick, but I don't like the sound of it much. For me, it sounds darker than the Tortex ones I generally like. I wish I could find Tortex with the shape of the Jazz. I know they make em, but I never see them anywhere.

Tortex Jazz are hard to find here in the U.S. as well. Does Musician's Friend ship to Canada?

hey candid, the best thing i can reccomend is time. When i first started using jz 3's them suckers use to fly out of my hand, so i naturally started to hold them tighter leading to the cramps. But as the days went by i got more and more use to playing with them. Took about 2 weeks of on and off playing to feel good. Now i love em, and they've def turned me into a more precise picker. So if u like em just keep trying, youll see results.

10-4 good buddy. Thanks for the encouragement.

Surprisingly they haven't flown out of my hand yet, but they do turn sideways sometimes. But I don't think that problem belongs to the pick . Good news is, I've actually been nailing a few pinch harmonics, although not all are intentional   . The term "all thumbs" seems fitting.

Beginning to understand what these things are about. Preferring the black. Funny how such a small thing can influence even your style, innit?

It's absolutely true, Candid. I used to be a Fender Extra Heavy user. My technique changed a lot as a result of the switch to the black Jazz III. I think I lost some things in my rhythm style that I was able to do a little better before the switch, but I'm getting them back. The difference now is that there is a lot more economy of motion, and I'm also a lot more precise and lot smoother than I used to be. That doesn't mean that I'm anywhere close to where I want to be, though. I'm still far slower and sloppier than I would like, but heck...I have a day job. :D

Economy of motion - eeyup. Was funny, I finally forgot all about the pick and just played, and enjoying what I could do that I couldn't do only a couple of days ago. But like you said, there's somethings I can't yet do that I could do with the Fender mediums, such as maintain a funk rhythm for extended periods. What I also found was that I went to playing less aggressively but much more precisely, including the material I wound up gravitating to.

I tried the Fenders again, and they were still more comfortable for me, but perhaps working with the J3 will also become comfortable. I doubt I'll be going back to the Fender picks, at any rate.

I'm going to check out the larger size XL Jazz III, still. Maybe the best of both worlds. Maybe not. It's fun to find out, at any rate. :)

I had trouble with this at first as well, but what I do is use a different grip entirely for rhythm - I hold the jazz III with my thumb, index, and middle finger, with my fingers parallel to the axis of symmetry of the pick (in other words, the tip of the pick points exactly the same direction as the tips of my fingers). You might eventually adjust the angle of attack slightly, but this is a good starting off point.

From here, you should be using all wrist with little to no finger movement (contrasting with lead playing which should use almost no wrist or arm movement), and the pick should be almost perpendicular to the strings. Since the edge of the Jazz III is beveled, holding it this way both minimizes the surface area of contact (reducing snagging) and allows the pick to slide across the string with minimal force.

I've found that using this picking technigue puts a lot of the pick's surface area under your fingers, so the pick rarely slips. Oh, and I actually prefer the red Jazz IIIs to the black ones for rhythm, since they are somewhat more flexible. But the difference is pretty subtle.

Anyway, that's what works for me, YMMV. :)

FWIW - I just picked up some Black tortex Jazz III at Guitar Center yesterday that they had just recently gotten in. Easier to grip than the normal black ones. These are 1.14mm. I went in looking for the Ultex version of the Jazz III which is rumored to be shipping this month.

Thanks, Uvacom. Haven't tried the rhythm method with the pick pointing in the direction of the finger. Will check it out.

Liking the black a lot now. Just have to forget it's there and play. Before I put down the guitar I picked up the Fender medium again, just to see. It felt like a big Chinese hand fan. Haven't dropped the black one once, though had to aim a few times, and when it felt right, it indeed lined with my finger point; like shooting a Glock... 'cept I wouldn't point that at my Balls.
