I don't get it...

are people wanting to change the pickups because they already know they want that sound, and know they don't want the D Sonic sound? Is it JUST because JP switched? I mean.. .buying a top grade guitar and a new pickup without even considering that the pickup in it might be great seems odd to me... I mean... Me, I know that I want a regular Steve's Special and Air Norton in a regular JP6... I also know that I want to experiment with different pickups in the BFR (Because I now have one and know some sounds I'd like to see if I could get), but I know that I want my BFR like it is too... (in short I want more of them LOL)

But, I wouldn't buy a top grade guitar with the intent to change pickups that are, for the most part, equal trade outs. In quality that is... I've read several comments about the new pickups being an upgrade. They're not. They are a replacement of equal value and quality.

Something else that strikes me...

The new pickups may sound great in the BFR... which JP has been using and probably wanted them voiced for, but not like you'd want in the regular JP6. Now, I'm sure MM wouldn't put them in if it was crap... but it may not be what people expect if they are basing wanting the new pickups off of recent live clips.

I just get this thing in my head when I read this thread of... "Ooooh... I want the new pickup... I don't know if I'll like it, but I have to have it because... I don't know why." LOL I mean, I think it will be more than fine for anyone who buys a new JP... but I don't think it's wise to change pickups in a Dsonic JP just because they've changed the production run. If they did it because of a flaw that would be one thing, but the Dsonic is part of the JP history too, and having the Dsonic JP6 still carries a strong degree of uniqueness to it and I'd hope people do some aural research to know just why they want to change pickups.

I'm a huge JP fan and I LOVE his tone, but there isn't a pickup combination he's used yet that I don't love, so I'd want to make sure any new pickup will work with my gear, because even though I have a boogie, I don't have the boogies JP uses so it could make a difference.

I just like switching and trying new pickups. I have drawers filled with them. It doesn't bother me one bit if I don't end up liking them. I also feel like I have enough gear that I can always find a combination that works. I didn't order the pickups because JP switched, I ordered them because they are new and I like trying new gear. I like having more tonal options.

As I mentioned above I won't do the soldering on BFR's myself because I'm too sloppy with the iron to mess around on a new guitar, but on my other guitars I'm always switching pickups in and out depending on what I feel like. I even keep a notebook with my notes on what different pickups sound like in different guitars.

I should add that had both my new guitars made the new pickup date, I would have thrown one of my D-Sonics in it to hear the difference with them in the BFR's.

hey BP, which pickup did he use in that riff @04:52 in Rite of Passage?

It's a good thing BP was at that point Mission Impossible style hanging from the ceiling in the studio to determine exactly what pickup was being used. Always getting the inside scoop, that guy.

I'm definitely NOT going to switch pickups in my existing JP guitars. I like them the way they are. JP switched and that's cool for him, but my guitars were made when he used the pickups that are in them. If a new guitar happens to come with the new pickups then that's cool. Then I'll just have a wider variety of tones to play with.

I'm with you on that one. The pickups aren't better, just voiced differently. Same DiMarzio quality we had before.

This is the same reason I want to find a JP with the original pickup configuration. That way I can have a piece of each evolution in the JP tone and feel. I don't play Boogie amps (right now) because I'm not looking for JP's tone. I have my own tone and it just so happens the JP guitars help make that happen. I also love JP's tone, but the nostalgia is why I keep the OEM pups in my guitars. Plus, it gives me a reason to buy a new guitar when he switches configurations.

Mesavox i like the way you think :)
let's not forget that we live in a profit based economy...think twice about changes...:D

on topic: I am very curious if live JP switches the guitars at the songs from different albums!?
more specific: if he uses live that guitar and pickups that he recorded with those songs/albums....if not that's a point to focus on when speaking about new pickups and hysteria of fans to have them before empirically based judgments

To a certain extent, JP does do that. Usually, he's got two guitars in every tuning that he needs to play the collection of songs they're playing on the tour. The exception, I believe, is the double-neck JP. I think he's only got one of those. Sometimes, it just so happens that he recorded a certain song in a certain tuning, and he happens to have that same guitar tuned the same way on tour.

I think he means do different guitars have different pickups on the tour rig... as per the album tones.

My guess is no, once he switches, he's switched.
