I just got my guitar this morning (thanks Pete!). The case is very nice, I wish they were all this nice!

The guitar, acoustically (how I test everything first) sounds very, very good. Nice and woody, very punchy. The neck feels like a slightly different profile to me, although it could just be some weird perception of my own due to it being painted or something (who knows). Speaking of the painted neck, it's very smooth, no problems at all. It's not sticky or tacky like Gibsons, for instance.

The lower horn being more cutaway is great for me. I have big farmer-sized hands and arms, so the more clearance the better. I was a little worried that the forearm cutaway wouldn't be as nice since the previous one was so scooped out, but really (so far at least) I didn't even notice (which is a good thing).

I only played it plugged in so far through my Pandora PXR4 here at work. It's fairly easy for me to make a comparison to my standard JP7 since I play it through that all the time.

Comparitively, the easiest way to put it is: more of the same. It's got a lot of the same characteristics of the JP7, just a bit more punchy, a bit more presence, a bit more sing-y on the top end. So far I'm really impressed. I can't wait to take it to the band room and really run it through the paces. :)

I only have one problem with it and it's a problem I've had on both my JP7's to date (it was fixed on one, the other I haven't sent in): the low B string is dragging the fingerboard behind the nut (see picture at the bottom of the post, sorry for the quality, it was taken with my phone). It's actually starting to break through the finish a bit, but it's still really minute, though it probably shouldn't touch at all.

As of right now, it's not causing me any tuning problems, so I'm not really worried about it. And, really, I just got the thing! I really don't want to have to send it ALL the way back to EB and wait a month or whatever for it to come back. They are busy folks, I respect that, and if I can live with it for now, I probably will (unless of course it's causing tuning problems). Hopefully the Blackburst one I'm waiting for won't have this issue as well. If that's the case, then I will probably send the Walnutburst back and get it fixed, I'll have at least one BFR to play in the interim! :D

Regardless of that small issue, I'm very, very pleased. Well done Sterling, Brian and Scott. :)

Congrats on your BFR! That means mine will be here in around 1~2 weeks... :D
Super hyped!

Jeffrey, if you don't mind, here's your guitar from Pete's BFR thread:

Looks like a quilt with a hint of flame figured top! Beautiful!

That be her!

Going to move my practice amp (83 MarkIIC+) and whatnot upstairs. Threw together a quick tune to show off the guitar for the forumites. :D

Probably take me a few days to get it all together and posted, especially since I will be out of town Thurs -> Sunday. ;)

After amp-whoring for so long, it's about time you get some clips of that MkIIC+ out!

Okay.

I've been writing a little stupid funky thing as I go (well funky/heavy, c'mon you guys know me by now!) and have come to a conclusion: I'm gonna have to send this BFR back to EB to get the nut/fingerboard thing fixed. :(

It's ONLY on the low B, but if I bend the string, or even BREATHE on the trem, it goes out of tune (and I do big full step bends on the low B a lot). Blah, oh well.

I will live with it for a bit (I don't wanna give it up just yet! lol :D) and probably wait until my second one comes in so I'm not entirely BFR-less. I also already have a buyer for my CBP JP7, and seeing as that's the only fully-functioning 7 string I have atm (my PRB is in DIRE need of some love), I have to wait until one more shows up and HOPE that none of the strings are dragging the fingerboard like my last two were when delivered to me.

BUT!

Beyond that little annoyance, I love this guitar! The tone and playability are great (I did a quickie setup to correct a few things)! The body is a lot more different than I thought. It seems thicker to me (not sure if it is or not) and that the upper horn is a little longer putting the guitar a bit farther back (if that makes any sense) which is good for me with my messed up thumb.

The forearm cutout caught me out at first. I REALLY liked the big "scoop" (I'll ask JP Thursday why he decided not to go with it anymore :D) and it made reaching the volume knob for me a lot easier as my forearm would just slot right in. When reaching for it the first few times quickly (I cut the volume on all breaks very quickly, it sounds SO much tighter), I almost knocked the guitar all over the place due to running into the body that I wasn't used to being there.

HOWEVER! Once I got used to it, it's fine. In a way, it's almost better when playing. It's just enough relief but a bit more support.

I won't REALLY know until I put it through 5hrs at band practice next Monday (our typical session length). I'll have to take a picture of it all sweaty and grimey just to make everyone cringe! :D

To recap: Very pleased, sounds great, needed a little setup (not a big deal at ALL) and slightly bummed about the string-digging-into-the-fingerboard thing, but that will get fixed I'm sure with zero fuss as EB's Customer Service is awesome. :)

I'm also going to get with Pete and see what he says, but he'll probably just tell me to call EB. :)

Rossie: I realized tonight that the amp has a blown speaker, lol! I need to get a new one for it, but it still sounds pretty good, just have the keep the volume down or it starts farting loudly. I'll probably work on the tune some more Sunday when I get home from being out of town, maybe have something listenable by the week. Keep in mind, I'm playing all the instruments (guitar, bass, drums) so it takes me a little while to get it all together. ;)

It's not unusual for a new guitar to need a nut break in period. My BFR was coming back sharp with moderate whammy usage at first. After going to town for a while and streching the strings out, I think I'm good now.

On a GOOD note, I got the guitar to the band room finally to play it through my real rig (rather than my recently-discovered blown speaker in my combo/practice amp)!

The best way I can describe it, I've already said before: more of the same.

It's really similar to my previous JP7's but: tighter, punchier, more clear, cleaner highs/lows (that could have something to do with the D-Sonic though, I haven't played one in a standard JP7 through my rig for comparison).

The BIGGEST difference I noticed in a straight comparison (I had both guitars there with new strings, freshly cleaned, intonated and setup as needed) is the note seperation. The BFR is just SO much more legible. When you do big 6 or 7 string chords with lots of extra 5ths and add9's, the transients REALLY pop on the BFR. The lows stay clean and clear, the highs and mids really cut through. I was really, really impressed. :D

Amazingly, I didn't have to touch a single knob anywhere on my rig. I plugged it in, it sounded fantastic, I left it at that.

So to recap, BFR JP7 vs. JP7 = more of everything you loved about the JP7's with quite a bit more note definition.

One thing I'm really curious about is how much the body dimensions changed. It really DOES feel quite a bit different when playing it standing up strapped than the old JP7 does. It's not a good or a bad thing, it's just different. The body feels thicker to me, I wonder if it is?

I did, unfortunately, notice when changing strings that the low B AND E are digging into the fingerboard. I originally thought it was only the low B. As of right now, it's not messing with tuning stability (I guess the strings have already "cut" themselves a path, so to speak) but once I hear from Pete, I'll get it taken care of.

Regardless, I love the thing and have played my fingers raw over the last two days. :)
